ALUMNI REPORT and THE CLASS OF 2023: WHAT THEY ARE DOING NOW.

JOSH BOURKE - GRADUATED 2018

In early High School Josh Bourke wanted to be a Police Officer but when he studied VET Music Industry Sound Production, he soon changed his mind. Josh had always enjoyed hands-on learning, and this experience introduced him to new skills and furthered his interest in how live music should be presented. After graduating in 2019 he began the Music Industry course at RMIT – but ‘it didn’t click’ he really wanted hands on experience and wanted to learn on the job. With part-time employment he was soon learning how to light a show and developed an interest in the use of led lighting now a key feature in the music industry staging of concerts.

Working with fellow alumni Michael Eather Josh is now employed by Front of House who have created screens for the Melbourne International Film Festival at the Myer Music Bowl and has helped to create three Ultra events also at the Myer Music Bowl and Flemington Racecourse. More recently he was part of the tech team for the Jess Mauboy tour and was involved in the creation of the Bridgerton Queen’s Ball.

His current plans are to continue to move up within the company and feels he has really found his niche in the area of led lighting video production. The hours are long ‘but when you love the job and the creativity it allows you the insane hours don’t matter. Every gig is different, new and special in its own way.’ He suggests that any budding led lighting video producers should volunteer their time at the local theatre and church groups to gain hands-on-experience and learn on the job by asking lots of questions.

Currently assisting, alongside alumni Michael Eather and Arran Bell, Josh is work as part of the Tech Crew on Mary Poppins teaching our current students the tricks of the trade!! Josh is an excellent example of pursuing your passion - and being successful without a University degree!!

THE CLASS OF 2023- WHAT ARE THEY DOING NOW

In the newsletters for the rest of the year, we will provide you with updates of what our graduating class of 2023 are up to. I asked two former students who are at University the following questions:

  1. What course are you studying and where?
  2. What are the subjects you are undertaking?
  3. Favourite subject? Why?
  4. Are you pleased you chose this course?
  5. What is the best thing about University?
  6. What career are you aiming for?
  7. Anything else you’d like to add?

MAJA DIXON

1.I'm doing a double degree of Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Global Studies at Monash University! For Global Studies, I'm majoring in International Relations!

2. In semester 1 my subjects were:

In Global studies: Leadership for social change and introduction to international relations

In Law: Foundations of Law and Criminal Law

In semester 2, I'm currently studying:

In Global studies: Geopolitical Security in the Indo-Pacific, and Interdisciplinary Collaboration in a Global World

Law: Torts, and Public Law and Statutory interpretation

3. Favourite subject - oooh this is tricky! I love Geopolitical Security in the Indo-Pacific because I'm learning so much about the world that I didn't previously know (or think I was particularly interested in - but I was pleasantly surprised!).

4. Yes, I am really pleased I chose this course! I was really torn about which university to go to (I even chopped and changed at the last minute), but I went with the option that I believed to be the most inspiring, interesting and rewarding course. I definitely feel like I've chosen the best option for me.

5. It's different for everyone, but my favourite part of being at university has been meeting new friends. It makes the challenging parts of studying bearable and the fun bits amazing. 6. I'm unsure at the moment, but definitely something concerning social justice and human rights. Whether that's working for a NGO, at the UN, as a human rights lawyer, or none of those options, I'm aiming for somewhere in that area!

7. I've learned that the transition to Uni looks different for everyone - there really isn't a right or wrong way to go about it. I'm grateful to have given myself space to settle in and navigate what I want to get out of it - slowly but surely. I'm still figuring it out!

MAE HOLLINGSWORTH

1.I am currently in the Bachelor of Agriculture course at Melbourne University, with a major in Animal Science.

2. My subjects this Semester include Animal Production Systems, Plant production systems, Genetics for Agriculture, and Foundations of Agricultural science.

3. My favourite subject so far is Animal Production Systems because it's very interesting to me. I also love how we can do hands-on activities with animals.

4. I'm definitely pleased with this choice, I hope to get a career in Animal health care, specifically in rehab. This course has definitely taught me so much about animals and science, and the plant subjects are pretty interesting too.

5. The best thing about my university would be the buildings with spaces to study, they have so many beautiful spots to really focus on study for as long as you need.

6. I hope to get a career in Animal Health care, I'm not entirely sure yet, hopefully something to do with rehabilitation therapy.
