Sandringham College Student Leadership Initiative

Introducing the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme

We are excited to announce a fantastic new initiative led by our dedicated Student Leadership team: the introduction of the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) at our school!

This initiative not only aims to promote environmental sustainability but also serves as a valuable educational tool for our students and wider community.

What is the Victorian Container Deposit Scheme?

The Victorian Container Deposit Scheme is a state-wide program designed to encourage recycling and reduce litter. Starting November 1st, 2023, Victorians can return eligible beverage containers, such as bottles and cans, to designated collection points in exchange for a 10-cent refund per item. The scheme covers a wide range of drink containers, including: Soft drink cans and bottles- Water bottles- Juice boxes- Beer and cider bottles

Why is this Important?

Recycling is a crucial part of environmental conservation. By participating in the CDS, we can significantly reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and our natural environment. Recycling these containers helps conserve resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and lessen pollution. Additionally, the scheme provides a tangible way for students to engage in sustainability practices and understand the impact of their actions.

How will it work at Sandringham College?

Our Student Leadership team has worked diligently to implement this scheme within our school community.

Here’s how it will work:

Starting in week 6...

1. Collection Points:

  • Recycle bin points will be placed around the school where students and staff can deposit eligible containers. These points are clearly marked and located in high-traffic areas around the college both the Bluff and Holloway campus areas to ensure ease of access.

2. Collection and Processing:

  • We are partnering with Nu-recycling, a local recycling service, to manage our collected bins. Nu-recycling will pick up our bins regularly and transport them to eligible deposit sites.

3. Funds Raised

  • For every 10-cent container, 3 cents will go to Nu-Recycling for their collection service, and the Student Leadership Team will receive 7 cents. This money will go into the Student Leadership Fund for future initiatives, projects and charity.

Our Goals

Goal 1:

Reduce the amount of waste at Sandringham College that ends up in landfills and nature.

Goal 2:

Educate students and the community about the importance of recycling and environmental conservation.

Goal 3:

Raise money that will go the student leadership fund for student projects, initiatives and charity.
