DID YOU KNOW THE 1ST OF SEPTEMBER IS ALSO WATTLE DAY?
The Golden wattle or Acacia pycnantha is our national floral emblem. Each year activities are organised to celebrate Wattle Day. This day coincides with the first day of spring. It means eel season in the indigenous seasonal calendar. There are many varied species of wattle. Wattle reminds us of our Australian identity and connection to our country. Golden wattle is a symbol of remembrance and reflection. Indigenous people have used the blossom for thousands of years in ceremonies and medicine. It symbolises new beginnings and growth. Its life span is seven to twelve years.
Wattle artwork by Storm in Pathways Sustainability. She looked at the photo to hand draw the stem and leaves and used the opening of a gumnut dipped in paint to create the blossom.
