Ambulance:

This term, we were privileged to host a visit from the ambulance service, providing our students with a firsthand insight into their essential work. The team engaged our students in discussions on emergency preparedness, emphasising the importance of safety protocols and effective response strategies.

The highlight of the visit was the opportunity for our students to explore the interior of the ambulance and participate in hands-on demonstrations. This immersive experience allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of the equipment and procedures utilised by paramedics in emergency situations, including the operation of the ambulance stretcher.

In addition to fostering a sense of excitement and engagement, the visit served as a valuable educational opportunity, empowering our students with knowledge that could prove instrumental in emergency scenarios. We want to thank the ambulance service for their visit this Term!

Discovery:

In Discovery this term we are learning all about “Minibeasts”. These are small animals that do not have a backbone (scientifically known as invertebrates). We have been looking for different minibeasts in our school yard using magnifying glasses and being able to classify them into different categories. We are learning about their different parts, life cycles and their important roles in our environment.

Maths:

In Year one, students have been developing their fluency with mental maths through playing games and using materials.

Students have used their knowledge of place value to guess the secret number. After each guess the class receives more information about the secret number and use the 100’s chart to cross off the numbers that it couldn’t be until they find the correct number. In the game magic number, students have used their knowledge of adding single digit numbers to make 10, while racing to use their wand to point to the correct number. They have also played a 3 person card game called Friends of 10  and used Lego to build towers of 10 and 20.

Students have also been learning about time and have made a classroom calendar incorporating birthdays and special dates, the 4 seasons and the 7 Woi Wurrung Seasons. Students have worked on telling time to the hour and half hour, sequencing familiar events and estimating how long familiar things take.

In Prep, we have been learning about classifying, grouping, and sorting objects using hands-on materials such as toy animals and fruits in small group work. This led to lots of interesting sorting by: colour, shape, and size of objects. Students have also then learnt about placing and drawing these objects in a bar graph, to easily view which set of objects had the most and which had the least in their groups.
