Remembrance Day Poppy Art Activity

1. Discussion: The Meaning of Remembrance Day Begin with a short, thoughtful discussion about Remembrance Day — a time to honour and remember those who have served and sacrificed in wars and conflicts. Talk about the poppy as a symbol of remembrance and hope, inspired by the famous poem “In Flanders Fields.”Ask students:

  • Why do we wear poppies?
  • What does the poppy remind us of today?

2. Paint the Poppies Give each student a poppy cut-out and provide different shades of red paint. Encourage them to blend, layer, or stipple the colours to create depth and texture in their petals. Remind them that every poppy is unique — just like each person being remembered.

3. Add Details Once the red paint is dry, use black paint or markers to create the centre of the poppy. Optionally, add a light touch of glitter to the petals to represent light, reflection, and hope for peace.

4. Assemble the Artwork After the poppies are completely dry, students can glue them onto a wreath shape (cut from cardboard or heavy paper).Display the finished wreath in the classroom or hallway as a collective tribute to remembrance and peace.
