Last week sustainability students Kane, Ryan and Ava observed bees in the school yard and took photos of them around flowers collecting nectar.

Do you know what colours attract bees into the garden?

Bees love purple, blue, white, and yellow flowers.

Ryan and Hudson found out that bees are vital for a third of the world’s food production. Bees are so helpful in the garden to pollinate plants for us to enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables. How can you encourage more bees into your garden?

You can plant more native and flowering plants in colours that will attract bees. Follow Kosta on You tube-ABC Kids Buzzing Bees! /Gardening Australia Junior.

Junior Landcare also has a good video on You tube Getting the buzz on bees and other beneficial insects.

Bees need water to survive. In warmer months you can help bees by converting a bird bath or putting out a very shallow dish filled with a little water. Add a few rocks or pebbles for the bees to land on. Change the water regularly to keep clean and put it in the garden in a safe place away from pets and young children.

NOVEMBER 6th OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DAY

Last Thursday was a perfect 23C. The sustainability group enjoyed some time working in the school garden.

Over twelve million students around the world participated in this year’s Outdoor Classroom Day. It is an opportunity to enjoy nature and outdoor activities which is good for physical and mental wellbeing. Students are engaged, happy, communicating with each other, involved in creative play or team sport. In the Junior yard we have a meeting place which is ideal for an outdoor classroom. Classes can share a story, have a chat or play a game.
