Principal's Report

End of Term 2: Principal's Report Newsletter

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As Term 2 draws to a close, it is worth noting the wide variety of opportunities that have been available to our students both in terms of their learning and their wellbeing growth this semester.

Our Year 10 - 11 students have completed semester one examinations across all subjects, demonstrating commendable preparation and maturity. Likewise, our Year 8 – 9 students participated in core subjects while at the same time our Year 7 students wrapped

up assessments.

As reports will be distributed at the end of the term, feedback provided by teachers will assist students and parents/guardians to reflect on academic and personal achievements recognised and offer positive reflection of the consistent effort they have made, whilst looking towards their further growth in Semester 2.

Although the reports are archived for the duration of your child's enrolment at our College, I would strongly advise that you download your own copy and save this to your home computer for your future use.

This term we were also provided with the results of the Attitude to School Survey Students' voices are invaluable in shaping the direction and improvements of our school. Students across Year 7-12 completed the 2024 Attitudes to School Survey, where they provided anonymous insight into their experience of school and life.

Our student perspectives in fostering a positive and inclusive environment are highly valued, and the Attitudes to School Survey is one avenue for students to have their voice heard.

Opportunities for our students to demonstrate voice and agency include student and staff collaboration, on school council, as well as our Student Representative Council.

Adding to the richness of life at our College, many of our students have participated in sporting events, performances, celebration days, dunk the teacher opportunity and excursions. SOC has been a bustling hive of activity and I wish to thank both staff and students who made these things happen to enrich both our lives and our educational opportunities.

Last week, Mark Picone and I had the chance to participate in a field trip to New Zealand where we were formerly addressed by the Regional Minister of Education.

During our visits to New Zealand schools, we where each provided with insights and points for reflection in comparison to our local system.

The New Zealand system presented as one with significant variance, both between and within schools, with considerations to the equity of education, which are products of a largely decentralised model.

The term break will provide all of us with the opportunity to re-connect with family and friends. It also presents an opportune time to express thanks to the teaching and education support staff for their commitment to provide the best educational opportunities for our students; and to thank the parents in our school community for continuing to support us in the development of our young people.

Census Data Collection – Student Family Occupation and Updating Family Details

Every year the Department of Education conduct a census in August which helps determine the level of our schools’ student-based funding.

To ensure that the College is able to continue to provide quality programs and an efficient learning environment for our students it relies on being supported by Department funding. Student Family Occupation details are an important component used by DE to formulate our correct level of funding.

These details are originally collected on your child’s enrolment form but are often not up to date. For this census to be accurate we ask that all family details are up to date, including parent occupation and occupation code, employer and all contact details.

Please complete the data collection form that you will receive via email, even if you believe your details have not changed, and return to the College Reception as soon as possible.

Have you moved house or changed phone numbers?

It is vital that families maintain up to date contact information.

If your details change we ask that you please complete the Change of Details Form (below) and return to Reception or via email to south.oakleigh.sc@education.vic.gov.au

https://www.sosc.vic.edu.au/enrolment/change-of-student-personal-details/

It is also important that you keep your mobile phone number and email address details up to date on Compass. This is to ensure you do not miss out on vital information including student attendance alerts.

Extended Leave

I will be on leave at the beginning of Term 3 and Mr Picone will be Acting Principal in my absence.

I wish all our students and staff members have a safe and enjoyable holiday.
