Welcome to Term Three! 

Ready for a Great Sememster! 

We are looking forward to a great semester with lots of exciting activities. We can’t wait for the grade 1 concert, school swimming and ART FOR ALL – just to name a few. 

 

Literacy

The Little Learners Love Literacy (LLLL) program will continue to provide a structured whole-class learning sequence and resources for individualised learning. We encourage at-home reading to continue as well as the practising of levelled 'heart words'. We remind you that the take home readers should be at an ‘independent’ level for your children, should be enjoyable to read together and provide an opportunity to practice skills other than decoding, such as fluency and comprehension.

 

Our writing focus for the term will be on narrative writing, through the exploration of the authors Aaron Blabey and Alison Lester. Students will study the authors’ style, techniques and practise comprehension strategies. They will also have a unit on procedural writing, exploring recipes and other procedural activities. Throughout the term, students will also participate in explicit lessons to identify word types and further their understanding of sentence structure. 

 

At home you can:

  • Read and fill in the reading log book.
  • Use the LLLL online platform for targeted digital books (login in reading log books).
  • Practise heart words (in random order).
  • Take authentic opportunities for reading and writing practise such as reading menus and recipes or writing cards.

 

Numeracy

In Mathematics, students will develop their additive thinking while applying various strategies such as bridging and doubling when working through addition and subtraction problems. They will explore the connection between addition and subtraction. The students will then learn about length measurement using formal and informal units before a short unit on location. 

 

At home you can:

  • Find authentic purposes for adding and subtracting such as at the supermarket or engaging with sport scores.
  • Practise fluency of addition and subtraction together.
  • Log in to Essential Assessment and complete My Numeracy tasks (please email your child’s teacher if you do have have but would like your child’s login details).
  • Notice and discuss units of length together such as on road signs.
  • Use informal measurement to measure things around them such as using their feet to measure the length of their room.
  • Use language such as over, under, left, right, above, below, inside, outside, etc.

Inquiry 

This term in Geography,  students will be exploring the concept of “Our Place Through the Seasons.” They will learn about how people are connected to places in Australia and around the world, and how weather and seasonal changes influence our daily lives. The students will investigate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander seasonal calendars and compare these with the four seasons we are familiar with.

 

Specialist Subjects

Performing Arts

Students will be working on their concert based on the book week theme, “A Symphony of Stories”.

  • Grade 1A will be using “Green Eggs and Ham”, by Dr Seuss.
  • Grade 1B will be using “Tiddalik the Frog”, a Dreamtime story.
  • Grade 1C will be using “The Magic Hat”, by Mem Fox.

These stories will inspire them to arrange Orff arrangements and movements for their performances. 

 

Physical Education

Students will use elastics to develop their balance and jumping skills. Students will continue to practise their fundamental motor skills such as dribbling and two hand throws.

 

Science

Students are beginning to explore earth and space science, looking at daily and seasonal changes in the weather and the environment, and Earth as one of eight planets in our solar system.

 

Visual Arts

For the Hero’s Gallery at Art For All, inspired by Vincent Namatjira, students will create a “Hero” work using watercolours. They will collage it with a range of textiles. 

 

Students will also manipulate and organise textile materials to express their ideas through joining, weaving and collaging threads and fabrics.

 

French

Bonjour tout le monde! I'm Kristen, your new French specialist teacher from Canada and I’m so excited to get started with everyone this term! This term our Year 1 students are continuing to explore the sounds and rhythms of French through song, dance and craft, building their listening and speaking confidence. 

 

We are excited to get into this very busy term!
