Bin It Better - Maribyrnong City Council

Council launched a recycling education campaign, 'Bin it Better', earlier this year to reduce the amount of contamination in kerbside recycling (yellow lid bins) and Food and Garden Organics streams (green lid bins) across the municipality.

The campaign, co-funded by Sustainability Victoria, seeks to empower Maribyrnong residents to place the correct items in the right bins for collection. By providing clear guidance and education, Council aims to enhance community awareness and engagement in recycling efforts.

One key message the campaign is focused on is: household batteries and electronic waste (e-waste) cannot be disposed of in any kerbside bin. They contain toxic metals and can overheat or become punctured, causing rubbish loads to catch fire in trucks or at the sorting facility. In recent months, there have been two fires in our trucks. There are many places in and close to the City of Maribyrnong where you can drop off old household batteries and e-waste for free, so that they can be recycled safely.
