STAGE 2 NEWS

It’s been a great term for Stage 2!  We have had a really busy term filled with so many events and fun activities.  We have been working hard in the classroom and investing a huge amount of effort into Athletics.  By the end of the week we should have all the finalists for the field events which will be held during the Athletics Carnival on the 19th of June.

Students only have a few weeks left to complete their ‘Projects’ which will be presented in Week 10. Students have selected from a variety of choices to complete two projects on the books we have been reading this term in class:  ‘Piano Fingers’ by Caroline Magerl and ‘Sonam and the Silence’ by Ed Le Brocq.  Both books have exposed the students to rich vocabulary and new and unusual words about places they have not heard of before.  We look forward to seeing some creative presentations.

This term, the Stage 2 students have explored a unit on collage, where they examined a variety of famous collage paintings and works of art.  These included pieces using different mediums, images, and vibrant colours.  A key focus was the self-portrait in collage, through which students demonstrated exceptional creativity and diversity in their ideas.  This activity allowed them to express their individuality and develop their artistic skills in a unique and engaging way.

In Mathematics, we have studied fractions and chance.  Students created their own fraction walls and used these to determine equivalent fractions.  They examined how we represent fractions on a number line and represent halves, quarters, eighths, tenths and twelfths.  When studying chance students played a game called ‘Closest to 100’, the aim of the game is to be the player who gets the closest to 100 from their cards. The chance element occurred when you had to use the 5 cards they were dealt.  This game created some fantastic mathematical thinking between students.

We started Gymnastics a few weeks ago and it has been great to see all the students so engaged, listening to all the instructions and learning some new skills along the way. Everyone has been jumping, rolling, balancing and spinning in a variety of different ways, as well as testing our core strength and balance skills.

Over the last week or so we have had quite a bit of wet weather and as you can imagine we still need to burn some energy. So we have started to do desktop drumming and movement. It is a great way to have some fun and get some exercise at the same time.

Lastly, congratulations to our Spelling Bee participants from Stage 2 who competed last week in our school final. The winner was Sebastian and the runner up was Bridie.
