National Simultaneous Storytime 2026
On Wednesday 27 May, our school will proudly participate in National Simultaneous Storytime - a wonderful Australia-wide event that celebrates the joy of reading and sharing stories. Each year, thousands of children across schools, libraries and homes read the same picture book at the same time, promoting the importance of literacy, imagination and connection through books. The books are written and illustrated by Australian authors and illustrators, promoting the wonderful work we see being created in our country every year.
This year’s selected text is Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller by Adam Jackson and Adrian Lloyd, illustrated by Jake Minton. The story follows Luna Roo, the rookie captain of FC Outback, as she faces nerves, challenges and tough opponents in an exciting football match. Through teamwork, courage and determination, Luna learns to believe in herself and work together with her teammates to succeed.
Families can enjoy a read-aloud version of the story through the official NSS livestream and partner platforms, including the Australian Library and Information Association website and Story Box Library (State Library Victoria). You may like to watch this live with younger children (below school age), however they also offer pre-recordings and replays for you to enjoy with the whole family at a suitable time, just be sure to register!
To further explore the themes of the text, families may also like to access the free curriculum-aligned resources and activities available through:
Reading regularly at home and sharing books together has a significant impact on a child’s development. Shared reading experiences help build vocabulary, comprehension, confidence and fluency, while also strengthening children’s speaking and listening skills. Importantly, discussing stories together encourages children to think deeply about characters, themes and ideas, supporting both literacy growth and critical thinking.
We encourage all families to celebrate National Simultaneous Storytime together by reading, discussing and enjoying stories at home. Every shared story helps foster a lifelong love of reading.
