Whats Happening in the Kitchen and Garden for 2026?

Garden

Year 6 have started handing in their formal garden designs and plants order sheets and I'm so excited with how clever they are in fitting so many great edible plants in their garden patches! All of the plants have been selected to grow over autumn and winter. When term 2 commences they will plant them out and then begin ongoing maintenance.

Year 4 created more cuttings for the fair and we now have a fabulous selection of herbs and flowers that will be potted up as they establish. They did an amazing job at learning about how plants grow and their parts. Please encourage them to practice making more cuttings at home. Below is a resource that will help you do this at home.

KITCHEN

We had another delicious fortnight in the kitchen and want to thank all the volunteers who have been joining us along the way.  Making use of what is left of tomatos for this season, we prepared some delicious tomato chilli jam to spice things up over winter.  Some students were apprehensive about a chilli jam, but we discussed how by removing the seeds and vein, you can acheive the delicious chilli flavour but without the chilli 'heat' they were worried about.  The result?  Many surprised and delighted faces as they tried it on the zucchini rosti.  When we were unable to source zucchini for some classes, we replaced it with pumpkin which is another great reminder that the recipes below are easily adapted to what you have in the fridge at home.  Give them a go - we'd love to see some photos of your 'at home' results!

SURFSIDE SNACK SHACK

Our Snack Shackers made yummy musk slice and last week we celebrated with orange cupcakes and slice. The students are getting more confident in the canteen and serving their customers. They are starting to learn money handling skills and doing a brilliant job with food handling  skills. If anyone is interested in helping out with this program, we meet on a Tuesday session 5 (2.15-3.15). Please contact Clancey to see how you can get involved!
