Round Two: Are You Ready to Race?
A huge thank you to everyone who jumped into our first Family Maths Challenge! It has been wonderful hearing about the "Target Reach" battles happening across Mentone. This week, we are shifting gears from cards to dice with a game called The Great Race.
The beauty of this challenge is its flexibility; it's designed so that our Foundation students can build their "counting-on" skills with physical objects, while our Year 6 students can sharpen their mental division and subtraction. These open-ended games aren't just about finding an answer—they’re about the "aha!" moments when a new strategy clicks. So, grab some dice, clear the kitchen table, and let the racing begin!
Challenge of the Week: The "Finish Line"
We want to hear your best "Maths Moments" from this week's game! Whether it was a lucky roll or a genius calculation, tell us how your family played.
THE BIG SCENARIO
The Situation: You are at 92 and you need exactly 100 to win.
The Roll: You throw a 4 and a 2.
- Foundation - Yr 2: If you add these dots together (4 + 2), how many more do you still need to reach the end?
- Yr 3 - Yr 4: If you multiply them (4 x 2), do you hit the target exactly?
- Yr 5 - Yr 6: Can you find a way to use these numbers to get closer using subtraction or division?
Help us celebrate!
Send a quick email to cspence@spmentone.catholic.edu.au with your feedback, a clever strategy your child used, or a photo of your game in action. We can't wait to see who is leading the pack!
