Dear Parents /Guardians,
There has been much happening around the College for students to participate in co curricular activities and showcase their skills in a variety of areas. In the last few weeks students have been involved in the DAV Debating competition and Debating workshops at St Joseph's Primary School, African Dance Group Performances at Sacred Heart Primary School and Simonds College, Years 7, 9 and 10 Maths Games Day, Australian Maths Competition, Performing Arts Concert, recording the Be Like Her Radio Program as week as the Victorian Schools and CGSAV Volleyball and CGSAV Netball, Volleyball and tournaments.
Last week I was able to watch online the Intermediate Band perform for the first time in ten years at the Victorian Music Festival, their three varied pieces were of very high quality earning a Silver Medal. Congratulations to the band under the tutelage of Ms Alison Hocking, this is a fantastic achievement.
I also had the privilege of attending the Frayne Speech Festival at Mount Lilydale Mercy College. During the morning I heard our two debating teams argue for the motion 'political parties should be required to present candidates from underrepresented groups' and against the motion that 'we regret the rise of AI'. These are two topics that resonate with us at the Academy. As a girls' college and an inclusive community, we want to empower all our students to aim high and not let how we identify ourselves stand in the way of our future achievements. We are also very aware of the changing world and one of the biggest changes happening not only in education, but across many industries, is the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI). At the Academy we are open to the use of AI as a tool to support and enrich student learning whilst acknowledging the challenges this may pose, just as we embraced technology and calculators many years ago.
In the afternoon, it was an honour to listen to Audrey Callanan speak on the topic of the Youth of Today and see her awarded runner up in Public Speaking. Audrey persuaded the panel of adjudicators comprising of Federal and State Members of Parliament, that young people need to be listened to and taken seriously. Congratulations to Audrey and the two teams of debaters, Christina Camilleri, Cara Egry, Florencia Herrera, Olivia Moffat and Ada Ryan. We are very proud of these articulate, hard working and strong young women in our community.
Well done to all students for taking up these wonderful opportunities and representing the college and thank you to the staff for all their efforts in preparing our students and giving them such a wide variety of opportunities.
Thank you to the parents, students and staff who provided feedback on the Year 9 program, we received valuable feedback and are taking your feedback and suggestions on board.
