The students have started Term Two with a buzz and we are learning the signs for all things 'travel'. We have been using sign phrases that use the words/signs - travel, visit, where and how. Within this, we have been learning about the signs for how we travel, by air, sea, road such as car, bike, bus, boat, plane and many more. The Foundation students drew a picture that communicated where they travelled during their recent holidays. We then unpacked how to sign this.
The Year One students have been becoming more confident when signing and it's great to see so many asking about unfamiliar signs. They have been working together as a whole group to find the matching halves of types of transport vehicles and sharing pictures and sentences about where they travelled to during the holidays.
Working on a similar topic to the younger year levels, the Year Two students have been creating more complex sentences with less support. They have been able to incorporate past signs into new learning. The students continue to build their confidence when signing in front of others and this is a regular part of our lessons from signing the morning roll to sharing our sign phrases with others. The Year Twos have been enjoying bingo and 'I spy' signs games.
The Year Three and Four students have started this term working on vehicle signs and shop signs with the plan to create a town in our classroom and deliver different packages around using these signs. We have also been watching stories that are translated into Auslan with similar topics. This is giving the students lots of exposure to different signs and different Deaf Auslan users.
The Year Five and Six students have started the term working with states, and cities of Australia. They are learning how to move around the map of Australia using signs and working towards creating a Deaf friendly brochure for a significant landmark of Australia.
