What's Been Happening in Year 5

Year 5 excursion to Melbourne Museum

Year 5 students had an engaging visit to Melbourne Museum, where they brought their classroom learning about Australia’s colonial history to life. Through exhibitions, artefacts and displays, students explored how the Victorian era, the Industrial Revolution and the growth of the British Empire shaped British colonisation of Australia. They learned about the reasons Britain established colonies, including penal settlements, free settler colonies and military outposts.

Students also explored what life was like for convicts, settlers and different groups of people in colonial Australia. They reflected on the impact of colonisation on First Nations peoples, including the loss of land, disruption to culture and their ongoing resilience. The visit also helped students understand how colonial settlement changed the environment through farming, mining, building towns and using natural resources.
