Head of Primary Years' Report

Dear parents, carers and our community of Hazel Glen College,

We have come to the end of another great term in the Primary Years and what a busy term this has been. We saw four year levels head out on their camps this term. Year 3 students stayed at Urban Camp in the city, Year 4 students visited Bacchus Marsh to take part in an adventure experience, Year 5 students spent time at Sovereign Hill and Year 6 students had their final camp at Phillip Island. We are proud of the independence and resilience our students demonstrated on camp and this is why these school experiences are important, as they support students in building new skills and making new friends within their peer group. A big thank you to our staff who put their hand up to attend the camps. In some cases, our staff attended more than one camp to ensure that these could happen. We appreciate the commitment and investment from our staff teams for this. Thank you to all those who have completed our Camp Parent Survey form. Your feedback is valuable to us when reviewing our camp program, as we are always seeking opportunities for improvement.

Next year, there will be changes to the Digital Learning Policy 2027 where students will have a maximum screen time whilst at school for 90 minutes across the day. We will no longer be a Bring Your Own Device school, however for the year levels that currently have this program, this will continue until can continue using their devices until they need to be replaced. Year Levels that will continue with BYOD devices next year will be Year 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Preps and Year 1s will not be part of the BYOD program and will have access to College-owned devices when required. We pride ourselves on the balance between use of digital devices and book work in our classrooms. This is evident in the standard of work our students produce and the learning routines in place where students use digital devices as an educational tool to enhance learning rather than for entertainment purposes.

Our information evening will take place in the Learning Lab for all of our enrolled prep families for 2027 on Wednesday, the 28th October. We are excited to welcome our families to the College.

Triple P Positive Parenting Program is an online resource where parents can gain advice and guidance for parenting matters such as staying calm under pressure and strengthening your relationship. It also provides behaviour support to fix issues before they become real problems, and positively influence your child’s skills and development. 

There are free online courses and resources for parents to access. We encourage you to take a look at this valuable resource.

As we are at the end of the term, there is an opportunity to speak to your children at home about the term they have had at our College. Ask your children what they have felt proud of this term and what goals they have for next term as we draw closer to the end of the year. Next term, we will focus on student learning progress, where our staff will celebrate student success for their effort and achieving personal bests within the classroom. We aim to develop learning confidence and positive wellbeing within the classroom.
