Year 4 News

Reading

The Year 4 students have recently concluded their novel study of Charlotte’s Web. They thoroughly enjoyed reading the novel and strengthening their reading strategies along the way. To wrap it up, students watched the film and engaged in rich discussions comparing the book to the movie. They explored the pros and cons of each version and shared a variety of thoughtful opinions.

Writing

Our Year 4 students stepped into the shoes of authors and researchers as they explored the exciting world of biographies. Focusing on influential scientists and courageous astronauts, students investigated the lives, achievements and challenges of these inspiring individuals. Through careful research, note-taking and writing, they crafted thoughtful and engaging biographies that not only showcased their learning but also aimed to inspire others. We're so proud of the curiosity, creativity and effort they brought to their work!

Maths

Year 4 students have been diving into the world of 2D and 3D shapes, exploring their features such as sides, angles, faces, edges, and vertices. Through hands-on activities and investigations, they've been identifying shapes in everyday objects and building their understanding of geometry in a fun and practical way.

In Maths, we've also been exploring growing number patterns. Students have been using skip counting and addition strategies to predict and extend patterns, as well as explain the rules behind them. They’re becoming confident pattern detectives with sharp mathematical thinking!

Inquiry

Our students have recently wrapped up their Earth Science unit, focusing on the Sun, Earth and Moon. As part of this exciting topic, we visited Scienceworks to deepen our understanding through hands-on learning. Back in the classroom, students have been busy creating 3D dioramas showcasing either a day/night scene or a model of the Sun, Earth and Moon system. The creativity and effort on display have been incredible.

Social and Emotional Learning

In Year 4, we've been developing important life skills through our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program. Recently, students have been exploring real-life challenges through problem-solving storyboards. These creative projects allowed students to illustrate everyday conflicts and work through them using empathy, communication, and thoughtful decision-making. By identifying problems, exploring possible solutions and showing positive outcomes, students deepened their understanding of how to navigate social situations with confidence and care. It’s been amazing to see their emotional intelligence and creativity shine!

Special Event

Scienceworks

Year 4 had an unforgettable excursion to Scienceworks in Melbourne! Our visit included an exciting trip to the Planetarium, where students were amazed by the immersive Sun, Earth and Moon show along with an exploration of the stars. The day also included hands-on exploration of the interactive exhibits, sparking curiosity and wonder about science, space and our universe. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect our classroom learning with real-world experiences and inspire the next generation of scientists and space explorers!

Pyjama Day

We’ve had an incredible day staying warm and cosy in our pyjamas despite the freezing Melbourne weather! Students had a blast participating in a range of fun activities, including designing their own pyjamas, slippers, and teddy bears. They also enjoyed completing a themed word search and listening to the mentor text Llama Llama Red Pyjama, which was a big hit with everyone. What a wonderful way to spend a chilly day together!
