Year 3 News

Reading

Over the last 2 weeks, the Year 3 students have been developing their reading skills with a strong focus on fluency and expression. Reading with fluency and expression not only brings stories to life but also enhances overall understanding. It's been wonderful to see students grow more confident, engaged and expressive in their reading.

In addition, Year 3 has been learning how to make predictions before and during reading. By using clues from the title, cover and illustrations, they’ve been making thoughtful guesses about what might happen in the text and refining those predictions as they read.

“Fluency is reading at a good pace.” - Nabil 3A

“At a full stop, we take a breath and pause.” - Olivia 3A

Writing

In Writing, we began our poetry unit. In week 9, we learned about rhyming words. We should look at the ending, and sometimes the middle, of a word to determine what it can rhyme with. This tied in with our Phonics work. We learned that ‘name’ can rhyme with ‘flame,’ ‘came,’ and ‘game.’ This is because the endings of the words sound the same.

In week 10, we learned about Haikus. We learned that instead of rhyming, what makes Haikus special is that they follow a certain syllable structure: the first line is 5 syllables, the second is 7 syllables, and the last line is 5. We need to think about creating these poems in a different way from our typical rhyming poems.

“It was really fun!” - Nina 3B

“I loved doing it! Rhyming the words together was fun” - Olivia 3A

Maths

Over the last 2 weeks, students have been reviewing their skip counting, and working on regrouping and renaming. Skip counting was a breeze after the first few days. We started by skip counting on the TV using a 100s chart. Students had a chance to come up to the front and use the touch screen to create patterns on the tv. We learned that 2s, 5s, and 10s have patterns that create straight columns down the 100s chart. 3s and 4s make diagonal patterns on a 100s chart. Students also learned about regrouping. We started off the week by using MAB blocks to represent a number. If we are trying to represent a number, we can do it in a number of different ways. Good mathematicians are able to fluently change between units, for example, 325 can be made with 32 tens and 5 ones. Students found the number expanders an excellent tool to help us visualise this as well.

“It was fun! I got up to 300” - Muhammad 3B

“We got to skip count. It’s kind of like multiplication” - Rohaan 3B

Inquiry

In Inquiry, the Year 3 students have been exploring the effects of extreme weather events such as floods, bushfires, and droughts. Through engaging discussions, texts and videos, students have been learning how these natural events shape and impact Australia's landscapes.

“Droughts are very dangerous.” - Kayan 3A

“Bushfires affect animals and wildlife.” - Isabelle 3A

Social and Emotional Learning

Over the last fortnight, students learned about the importance of being kind. Kindness is not important just because it is nice to be surrounded by kind people, but because it is an integral part of living in a cooperative society. We also discussed setting goals to improve our strengths. Students were asked to set a relevant goal and create a plan they could use to work toward this goal. These are all part of an important process of self-improvement.

Special Event - Pyjama Day

CPS was buzzing with excitement this morning as students and staff took part in Pyjama Day! Everyone enjoyed coming to school dressed in their comfiest pyjamas, oodies, and cosy robes. It was a fun way to bring some extra comfort and laughter to the day, and the classrooms were filled with smiles and relaxed vibes. Pyjama Day was a great reminder that learning can be fun and comfy too!
