Year 2 News

Reading

In Reading, Year 2 students have been summarising nonfiction texts. They have been looking for clues within the text to be able to retell it and verbally summarise it to a friend. When they summarise, students share the most important parts of the story in their own words. They have been practising summarising during reading sessions by reading a text, and sharing in their own words, the most important part to a peer.

Students have also been looking into connections between themselves and the text. They have been reading books as a class and thinking about the setting, characters actions, how they feel and making connections to themselves. Students have shared memories the texts have reminded them of and how they are similar or different to the character in the story.

Writing

During Writing in Year 2, students have been exploring the links between reading and writing and how they support each other. During reading, Year 2 students have been developing their comprehension and writing skills by engaging with a range of non-fiction texts during sessions. After reading, they practise summarising the key ideas and facts, focusing on identifying the main topic sentence. They give their summaries both verbally and in written form. These summaries help them better understand the structure and purpose of informational texts. This knowledge has then been applied during writing sessions, with students using the facts they’ve gathered to create their own information reports. The Year 2 teachers are incredibly proud of the students and the way they have used the new knowledge gained during reading to inform the information report they are following the writing process to create.

Maths

In Maths, students have been learning to describe and classify two dimensional shapes based on their physical properties. They have explored how to identify shapes by observing whether their sides are straight or curved, and whether any sides are parallel or opposite. Through hands-on activities and guided discussions, students learned that shapes like squares and rectangles have straight, opposite, and parallel sides, while circles have curved edges with no corners.

With a solid understanding of two dimensional shapes, the students are now transitioning to the topic of time for the remainder of the term. Students will focus on reading analog and digital clocks to the hour, half-hour, and quarter-hour, as well as learning to sequence events and understand durations using calendars and timetables.

“We have been learning about shapes. We have used the computers to manipulate shapes.” - Zareen 2A

“I liked learning about clocks. We drew them on our mini whiteboards. I also liked using mini clocks and saying the times.” - Raff 2A

Inquiry

In Inquiry, Year 2 have continued to develop their understanding of reduce, reuse, and recycle, and have put their knowledge into action by reusing materials to plant some seeds. The children re-used egg cartons to plant their seeds and have been super responsible in taking care of them. This hands-on activity not only reinforced their learning about sustainability and environmental responsibility, but also encouraged them to see the value in repurposing everyday items rather than throwing them away.

As part of the project, students discussed the importance of reducing waste and how reusing materials can help protect the environment.

Social and Emotional Learning

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons, Year 2 students have been exploring everyday scenarios to develop their understanding of help-seeking behaviours. Through guided discussions and role-playing, they identified situations where they might need help, such as feeling left out, getting frustrated, or facing a problem at school. Using these real-life examples, students created their own help-seeking mini books, illustrating and writing about who they can go to for help, what they can say, and how seeking support can make a positive difference. This creative process empowered students to express their feelings, build empathy, and develop confidence in asking for help when they needed it.

“Help seeking books are really fun. It tells about a time when we have helped someone.” - Georgia 2A

Special Event

Melbourne Museum

The Year 2 had a really fun excursion to Melbourne Museum this week where they extended their learning about Earth and its resources. All children displayed our school values throughout the day, showing resilience, responsibility, and kindness.

During the excursion, students visited the Dynamic Earth section, where they learned more about rocks, minerals, and how natural processes shape our planet. The students also had the opportunity to explore the Forest Gallery, where they made connections between living things and their environments.

“My favourite part of the museum was going to explore the old Melbourne house” - Carissa 2C

“I liked looking at the bones and getting to hold the different fossils” - Tony 2C

“I got to hold dinosaur poo and it was hard like a rock!” - Lucy 2C

“I thought the excursion was really fun and there was lots of cool dinosaur bones. We got to see cool stuff.” - Jamari 2A

“We saw dinosaur bones and we got to touch some too! We also saw two frogs outside. We heard storms in the Triceratops room.” - Zoe 2A

“I liked the big snake but it wasn’t real. I didn’t like eating outside because it was cold. I liked sitting on the bus with my friend.” - Jaan 2A

Pyjama Day

On Friday, the Year 2 students got to take part in Pyjama Day and enjoyed a day of learning in super cosy clothes! The children were excited to come to school in their comfiest outfits showing off their oodies, robes and brightly coloured pyjamas. CPS was filled with smiles and giggles as everyone enjoyed a day of lounging and learning. Year 2 students and teachers wish everyday was pyjama day!
