Term Finale, November 2024

As 2024 concludes, our journey moving forward into Senior School in 2025 has led to ongoing partnerships between students, staff and families of our college. Thanks to their unwavering efforts, our team has ensured an exceptional Year 10 student experience. These events and activities have included the final Elevate Study Skills session, the ongoing after school homework club, birthday celebrations and more new exciting plans for 2025. We are confident that these undertakings, together with the upcoming work experience program and end of year awards, will engender a positive affirmation of our student engagement both in and out of the college. More importantly, may we cherish and celebrate each day by making a difference through our actions of kindness, care and compassion so that our cohort will continue as an exemplar of leadership among our students as we eagerly prepare for 2025.

Mr. Justin Wu,

Year 10 Pedagogy Engagement and Leading Teacher.

An exam letter and exam timetable will be provided to students and families. When not sitting exams, students will complete study under supervision in classes. Students should take the time to use their STUDY SKILLS to help them prepare. Please discuss with your subject, form teachers or the Year 10 team if you have concerns about exams

Summer Uniform Reminder

As the weather becomes warmer, a courtesy reminder that summer uniforms will gradually need to be worn. During this term and leading into Term 1 2025, we expect the summer uniform will start to be worn. P.E. uniforms should only be worn on designated sports days. Students are also expected to bring in their Ready to Learn Materials to form and classes throughout the day. Our form and classroom teachers will continue to support your child by conducting regular checks.

WORK EXPERIENCE, WEEK 9

In conjunction with Pathways, we are pleased to announce that all Year 10 students have been allocated a work experience placement. Please remember that Year 10 work experience will occur at the end of Term 4 during Week 9 (December 2nd to December 6th). It is the expectation that all Year 10 students will attend their work placement with their employer during Week 9. This is an exciting opportunity which could possibly lead to on-going employment! Please ask your child to utilise this week to effectively to find an employer and complete the process. It is essential that students actively take responsibility for finding their own placements.

On Thursday the 14th of November, Ms. Neill will present a workshop focused on work experience expectations and procedures.  Should there be difficulties in securing a work placement, could you please contact a member of Career Pathways Office (Ms. Neill and Ms. Bekiaris) for assistance.

STUDY SKILLS PROGRAM

Our success with the Study Skills program, along with the Time Management Workshop in Week 4, has led to 99% positive engagement and endorsement. The success of the final workshop will further augment your child’s learning.  New themes and final seminars will be provided by Elevate Education in 2025. Here are some key essential tips and skills for parents and families to engage with their child at home during the school holidays:

  • Understanding Personal Study Habits: Identify their individual study preferences and determine the most effective study methods for them.
  • Homework Completion: Encourage students to dedicate a minimum of 30 minutes per subject daily to homework tasks.
  • Work-Life Balance: Support students to balance any part-time job responsibilities with their schoolwork and other commitments.
  • Practising Subject Skills: By regularly practising core and elective subjects, students will build mastery of content and skills needed for successful outcomes. Students will also understand how practise leads to finesse in their learning.
  • Managing Stress: Whilst we all encounter stress in our lifetime, it is just as important to have plenty of rest, eat well and prioritize what areas need to be reviewed on the day of study.
  • Short and Long Term Goals: Whilst goal setting is important, prioritizing goals is also vital to ensure that immediate and future needs are met in quick and real time. Short term goals could include completion of more homework daily or bringing equipment to class every day, whilst long term goals would be improving attendance and achieving a GPA above 3.5.

Year 10 into 11 ORIENTATION WEEK 8

  • After exams during Week 8 (November 25 to November 29th) Year 10 students will be assigned to their Year 11 classes
  • In place of SEL, we will have our Form Groups as VASS classes

GPA Final Cycle Term 4 2024

By end of week 6, GPA results will have been released and made accessible to all students and their families. The Year 10 team eagerly anticipates celebrating the success and growth of our students, particularly those who have shown significant improvement in their last GPA assessment. Building on the achievements of the first cycle, we are optimistic for another round of successful GPAs for all students during Term 4. We encourage parents and families to reach out to their child’s form teacher if they wish to discuss feedback or express any concerns regarding GPAs, especially pertaining to both core and elective subjects. Similarly, we encourage students to communicate with their subject teachers regarding their academic progress. We wish our Year 10 cohort the best of luck when it comes to achieving the highest growth rate in the final cycle of the term before the start of exams.

Elevate Education Study Skills Seminar

We are pleased to announce during Week 5, the Year 10 students underwent their final Elevate Study Skills Seminar on Time Management. As the final piece in promoting our ongoing work with study skills in form and SEL classes, students participated in activities and workshops hosted by 7 new Elevate presenters. Our students were able to appreciate the finer points of not only studying, but also a chance to prioritize and plan for their future on the eve of exams and the next steps orienting for Year 11 in 2025.

Ultimately, the feedback surveys from students resulted in a final and overall 99% endorsement rate, again highlighting the importance of having strong study skills as part of the learning experience. It was most pleasing to hear feedback including having confidence in our student’s self-growth and making the most of time management in the year long program!

It was also fantastic to see our students engaged by the sessions, but more importantly the feedback and excitement from students knowing that they have supports from our college and Elevate Education to prepare them for success in Semester 2 exams, but also continuing our Study Skills work in 2025. 190 students are now working to promote the Study Skills program with a brochure of their creation in recognition of the Elevate Seminar Program!

I would like to thank Mr. McGavisk, the Year 10 team and also the Elevate Education group for organizing and delivering the Study Skills content. A special acknowledgement goes to Ms. Hannah Atkinson for helping to make this event possible and eventful for our students. We look forward to expanding the work of 2024 with a study camp retreat at Melbourne University for our Year 11s of 2025!
