Library News

A chess board left at a strategic location in the school library has shown that this game, which can trace its origins back over 1500 years ago, is still a popular pastime.  A form of chess is thought to have originated in India, although the modern version dates back to the 5th or 6th century CE in Persia.  The game was based around military divisions and included pieces such as the elephant (bishops) and chariots (rooks).

The State Library of Victoria in Melbourne is home to the largest collection of volumes on the subject of chess in the Southern Hemisphere, with over 1300 resources available. The oldest book in the MV Anderson Chess Collection is The Game and Play of Chess from 1483.

Some famous adherents of the game include, actors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Woody Harrelson, Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin, physicist Albert Einstein, basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo, boxer Lennox Lewis and singer Madonna.

Some chess-themed books available at the CSC library are, Trigger, a fictional story about a young woman pushed to excel by her terribly demanding father, The First Move, a chess-themed high school love tale and Check and Mate, a relationship saga set around the world of competitive chess.  If you want some practical advice, check out Chess for Beginners or Checkmate - the Wonderful World of Chess.
