Term 2 in Year 6

The Grade 6 department is looking forward to another busy and productive term. Interschool sport, involving the Grade 6 students, commenced in week two, and we will have the RoboGals visit each class for an interactive incursion about coding towards the end of the term.

The start of Term Two began with connecting to our upcoming election. Students looked at the key features of the Australian electoral process, as well as identified the roles and responsibilities of electors and representatives in Australia's democracy. The concept of energy transfer and electrical circuits will be our scientific focus, with students investigating ‘Watt is our Future?’. The physical science of energy will be explored through research and experimentation. Students plan safe, repeatable investigations to identify patterns and test relationships and make reasoned predictions. This is a terrific platform for student voice and agency. Towards the end of the term, students will also learn about sudden geological changes through natural disasters.

Our literacy focus will continue to be on developing students’ reading comprehension, narrative writing and commencing a structured spelling program. In Reading, each class will read The Silver Donkey where they will explore the purpose, structure and features of fables and begin crafting their own through writing. The Writing Revolution will continue to guide this process as it focuses on a range of skills such as sentence fluency and descriptive writing. During this unit, students will also expand their vocabulary through our readings and build their knowledge around what is being read.

In Numeracy, the main areas to be covered this term include fractions, integers and cartesian planes for location, as well as multiplicative thinking through the Scaffolding Numeracy program. Through each of these units, we will continue to work on efficient problem solving strategies and the order of operations in a range of contexts. We will also continue to revisit many mathematical concepts in the Daily Review.

Homework has commenced and is due on Monday each week. Students are expected to read for 40 minutes, five times per week, complete a reading reflection, and work on maths activities through the Essential Assessment website. The details have been posted on Google Classroom. Please allocate some quiet time at home for your child to complete the homework.

Grade 6 students have received their secondary school application forms. These must be completed and returned to FWPS by Friday, 9 May 2025. Make sure all relevant sections are completed or they will be sent back home. If you have any questions, you can contact Sandra at the office. Information regarding camp and following payments will be posted to Compass. Please reach out to Mikala via Compass for any questions.
