Hands on Learning
During term 3 we have had a number of students involved in the Hands on Learning café, Kyabram Fauna Park (which is now part of Zoos Victoria) and the Men’s shed.
A new group has begun in the Café, getting to know each other, developing our communication and kitchen skills. We have been cooking a variety of items, we have worked on learning a savoury and sweet recipe each week. Making enough sweet items to freeze and later sell in the canteen.
The Kyabram Zoo group have only recently started back at the zoo. We began by having a tour of the zoo and getting to know some of the animals. Students enjoyed feed the bird in the aviary, although some were not sure to begin with if the birds would hurt when they took the food from them. They were relieved to find that the birds were very gentle. We have also had the opportunity to feed the kangaroo island kangaroos a special treat and make an enrichment toy for the dingos.
The Men’s shed has again been a great success, with the students’ making trays. They developed skills in measuring, and found out why the old saying ‘measure twice, cut once’ is important. They are getting very good using the tools to create their projects.
