Student Leadership 2024

Tim Clifton - Learning Specialist for Student Voice and Agency

Following an outstanding start to the year, the Student Leadership Team were asked to report on their first major student-led, whole school event: Neurodiversity Week

Here is what our Bluff Road Campus Captain Anastasia Saluni and Holloway Road Sports Leaders Will Baker and Rylee Ward had to say:

Bluff Road Campus Captain: Anastasia Saluni.

Throughout Term 1, as student leaders, we attended fortnightly meetings held at lunchtime on Fridays. These meetings focused on reviewing our commitments, clarifying our roles and responsibilities within the school community. They provided us with a clear understanding of what was expected and helped in planning upcoming events and activities for the school community.

One event we helped plan was Neurodiversity Week, held on Tuesday, March 19th. We aimed to raise awareness about Neurodiversity Day, a global initiative combating misconceptions regarding neurological differences and celebrating the strengths of neurodiverse individuals. We encouraged our peers to participate in events and activities throughout the college.

This student-led day received support from Mr. Clifton and the Wellbeing Team. We organized a gold-coin donation for casual clothing, an art mural activity at the Bluff-Road Campus, and a successful bake sale. All proceeds will benefit Yellow Ladybugs, an organization supporting autistic girls, women, and gender-variant individuals.

Yellow Ladybugs facilitates social activities for autistic females and gender-diverse youth, fostering peer relationships and instilling autistic pride. We chose to support this organization due to its meaningful impact.

We're delighted to announce that Sandringham College raised over $900 through gold-coin donations, the bake sale, and campus activities. This achievement reflects the generosity and dedication of our students, staff, and families, and we're immensely proud of everyone involved.

The funds will support Yellow Ladybugs, a cause close to our hearts. We believe our efforts will make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we aim to help.

We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed, the Wellbeing Team for their support, and the student cohort for participating in the events. Whether you donated, baked, or helped spread the word, your support was invaluable. We couldn't have done it without you.

We hope our achievement inspires others to engage in charitable causes and make a positive impact. Together, we can achieve great things!

Holloway Road Sports Leaders: Rylee Ward and Will Baker.

In celebration of Neurodiversity Week, students and staff joined forces on Tuesday, March 19th, for an energetic basketball showdown and a day of casual dress across both campuses. This initiative aimed to promote inclusivity and raise awareness about neurodiversity within our school community.

The event, spearheaded by year 12 sport leaders Rylee Ward and Will Baker, in collaboration with the Sport/P.E teachers, Wellbeing Team and Learning Specialist for student voice and agency Timothy Clifton,  was meticulously planned through a series of meetings and digital communications on Microsoft Teams. Student participation was facilitated through a sign-up sheet and a Microsoft Forms survey to ensure broad inclusion and accessibility.

On the designated day, both teams geared up for the anticipated match as spectators eagerly lined up outside, filling the seats in anticipation of the game. The event was a success, with both teams giving their all and the crowd cheering on with enthusiasm.

In addition to the basketball game, students dressed casually in exchange for a gold coin donation, and an art mural, led by the arts leaders and arts teachers, added to the festive atmosphere.

Thanks to the collective efforts of donors and participants, $900 was raised across both campuses, reflecting the generosity and support within our community. All proceeds donated to the Yellow Lady Bugs.

Heartfelt gratitude is extended to all who contributed, whether through donations or active participation. Special thanks are also owed to the Wellbeing team for their invaluable assistance and to the PE staff for organizing the teams and ensuring the smooth running of the event.

Sandringham College Leadership Summit:

On Wednesday, March 20th, the Student Leadership Team participated in our inaugural Sandringham College Leadership Summit.

We were fortunate to have several guest speakers from the Bayside Council, alumni, in-house Wellbeing experts, and other specialist teachers engage with students. Each speaker delved into the concepts of student leadership, voice, agency, and wellbeing, inspiring leaders to enact the changes they wish to see within the college and the broader community.

Congratulations to the Student Leadership team on a truly fantastic inaugural summit!
