Foundation 

This week, we have really enjoyed reading ‘Wendy’ by Gus Gordon, and learning about what makes Wendy such an adventurous and brave character. We have been using the pictures to look closely at the story and dig deeper into what is happening, making predictions and thinking about how the characters might be feeling. 

In maths, we have been investigating subtraction and learning about what happens when we take objects away from a group. We have used lots of hands-on activities to help us understand subtraction. We also enjoyed reading and singing stories such as Six Little Ducks and Five Little Frogs to practise counting backwards and taking away.

Just a reminder to keep reading at home each day. Ten minutes each day is much more helpful than trying to do it all at once. Regular short practice helps children build confidence, fluency and enjoyment when reading.

Music

Students have been loving our dance unit this term, as we explore the music from The Greatest Showman. Students have been working hard on a performance, that will be taking place at the Week 8 assembly. It would be fantastic to see families there to watch!

Year 11

Wow — how is it Week 6 already? We’re officially over halfway through Term 3, and there has certainly been plenty happening for our Year 11 students over the past few weeks!

A big congratulations to Kayla and Aidan for their efforts representing Wedderburn College at the NCD level of Athletics. Well done on some fantastic achievements — it’s always great to see our students getting involved and representing the College so well.

Our VCE students have been busy completing SACs for their Unit 2 subjects as the workload continues to build. Meanwhile, our VM students have been keeping themselves busy completing plenty of little jobs and projects around the school. We’re particularly looking forward to seeing what you manage to do with the cubby house — watch this space!

There’s plenty more to look forward to, with Book Week fast approaching. Make sure you start getting those costumes organised! We also have the much-anticipated Opening Ceremony of the Reading Olympics coming up. Can Jacka claim the Reading Olympics and make it two victories in a row, or will Ansett come out victorious? Let the games begin!

As we head into the second half of the term, keep working hard, stay organised and make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.

Mr G’s Study Tip – Look After Yourself!

There are plenty of colds and flus going around at this time of year, so remember that looking after your health is part of being ready to learn.

Get plenty of sleep, eat well, stay hydrated and give yourself time to recover when you’re unwell. And if you do miss school, touch base with your teachers and catch up on missed work as soon as you can.

Healthy body + healthy mind = better learning!

Vocational Major

Students have been busy learning important life and work related skills. This term they have analysed how to save for and buy a house, undertake a job interview and review leadership styles and attributes. Students are attending a leadership excursion at Melville Caves on Sept 4th, 2026. Please ensure you sign the online permission slips for your student.

Year 12 Update

There is certainly plenty happening for our Year 12 students as they move further into Term 3 and begin looking ahead to life beyond school. Alongside their final months of classes, students are now beginning some important planning for 2027.

VTAC Applications

Our Year 12 students have now mostly completed the VTAC application process, with students interested in tertiary study creating their VTAC accounts and adding at least one course preference for 2027. Well done to those students who have completed this process!

VTAC applications for courses commencing in 2027 opened on 3 August, and students can continue researching courses, adding preferences and changing the order of their preferences as their plans develop. Students do not need to have everything completely decided at this stage and preferences can be changed a number of times throughout the application and offer process. There is no additional fee for changing course preferences.

For current Year 12 students, timely VTAC applications close at 5.00pm on Monday 28 September. Applications can still be submitted after this date; however, late and very late application fees are considerably higher.

Some important dates for students and families to keep in mind are:

• Monday 28 September, 5.00pm: Timely VTAC course applications close
• Friday 9 October, 5.00pm: Equity Schemes and VTAC scholarship applications and  supporting documentation close
• Thursday 10 December, 7.00am: VCE results and ATARs released
• Saturday 12 December, 12 noon: Change of Preference closes for the December offer round for current VCE students
• Wednesday 23 December, 10.00am: December offer round released for eligible current Year 12 students
• Thursday 24 December, 12 noon: Change of Preference closes for January Round 1
• Tuesday 12 January 2027, 2.00pm: January Round 1 offers released
• Wednesday 27 January 2027, 2.00pm: January Round 2 offers released

Further offer rounds continue throughout February. Students who receive an offer can also remain eligible for higher preferences in subsequent rounds, so receiving an offer does not necessarily mean the process is finished.

Mrs Woodman and Mrs Barker are available to support students throughout the VTAC process, including researching courses, organising preferences and navigating Change of Preference after results are released. We encourage students to ask questions and seek support rather than feeling that they need to work through the process alone.

Scholarships 

Students are also encouraged to begin exploring scholarship opportunities for 2027. Scholarships are not limited to students achieving exceptionally high ATARs. Scholarships may recognise a wide range of circumstances and achievements, including academic achievement, community involvement and where a student lives, and can assist with expenses such as books, study materials, moving costs, course fees and other costs associated with tertiary study.

VTAC's Equity Schemes and Scholarships application is now open. Applications and all required supporting documentation must be submitted by 5.00pm on Friday 9 October. VTAC recommends submitting supporting documentation by 18 September where possible, allowing time to address any issues before the final deadline.

Students should also remember that not every scholarship is administered through VTAC. Universities and other organisations offer their own scholarships, each with different eligibility requirements and closing dates. We strongly encourage students to explore the scholarship pages of any universities or institutions they are considering and to apply for opportunities for which they may be eligible.

Holiday Classes

The upcoming school holiday period is an important opportunity for our Year 12 students to continue preparing for their final weeks of classes and examinations.

A number of teachers will be offering Year 12 holiday classes and study opportunities during the second week of the holiday break. A timetable with days and dates of these sessions will be provided to students over the next few weeks. 

We strongly encourage students to make use of these opportunities where possible. Holiday classes provide valuable time to consolidate learning, seek individual assistance, complete outstanding work and begin focused examination preparation before returning for the final stage of Year 12.

At the same time, we encourage students to find a sensible balance during the break - making time for study and preparation while also allowing themselves some genuine time to rest and recharge before what will be a busy and exciting final few weeks of school.
