Welcome to IPS.

This Friday sees the end of Term 2 and an early dismissal at 2.30pm. This term has been jam packed with student learning and a variety of events.

Reports are available on COMPASS this Friday from 4pm, and it is a great time to reflect on student achievements and set goals both at home and at school to support those children who are excelling, those who are working well and those who might benefit from some additional encouragement.

Education is not a linear journey for any of us. There are peaks and troughs, periods of acceleration and periods of slow growth. Holidays provide time to pause and reflect, before moving forward again.

Mid year is a good time to talk to children about goal setting for Semester 2. Encourage your child to talk to you about what they feel they  are "good" at and what they might want to "get better at".  Positive language reaps positive results.

Remember that we are all partners in learning, parent, carer, teacher, support staff and, of course, student/child. When we are all on the same page, travelling in the same direction we create and maximise opportunities for achievement and excellence.

Former IPS Students Return for Work Experience

This week, we were delighted to welcome nine Year 10 students from Kew High School who returned to Ivanhoe Primary School to complete their work experience placements. Remarkably, all nine students are former IPS students — a true full-circle moment!

The group spent time in classrooms and specialist learning spaces, working alongside many of our teachers. While some faces may have changed, the names may be familiar: Toby Clayton, Levi Hung, Patrick Sweeney, Leroy Cooper-Powell, Flynn Poulios, Nick Patsoukas, Elicia Flynn, Youny Kim, and Jaida Scholl.

It was wonderful to see them reconnect with the school community, and several shared just how different the experience felt being "the teacher" rather than the student. One even commented on the boundless energy of primary school students compared to their high school peers!

It has been an absolute pleasure to have them back, and how heartening it is that they chose to return and contribute to the community where their learning journey began.

Leading Instructional Excellence

Our school values the learning and development of our staff, and the positive impacts this has on student outcomes and school improvement.

I’m pleased to share that Pam Wright, Steven O’Callaghan, Chrissy Temple and I recently successfully completed Leading Instructional Excellence with the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership.

This evidence-informed program strengthened our capacity to lead the implementation of explicit teaching across the school.

Some of the key knowledge that we are bringing back to share with colleagues includes:

  • strategies to maximise student attention, focus and regulation
  • increased awareness around models of memory, and how to support students to more easily retain their new knowledge
  • proven approaches to support our staff to align their teaching with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0.

We look forward to implementing the knowledge and skills from the program to continue to support student outcomes and wellbeing.

New Zealand Leadership Delegation Visit to IPS

On Wednesday morning, Ivanhoe Primary School was proud to host a delegation of six principal class leaders from New Zealand as part of a leadership tour of some of Victoria’s highest performing state government schools.

We had the opportunity to share some of the strategies and practices we’ve put in place to build a strong school community and improve outcomes for our students. The visiting leaders toured the Treehouse, observing our Foundation students in action, and also spent time with one of our Year 6 classes.

As a token of appreciation, the delegation presented us with a special trophy — a beautifully carved Māori sculpture symbolising growth and flourishing. This meaningful gift is now proudly displayed in the trophy cabinet in the main entrance foyer of the Waterdale Road building.

Lost Property

There are quite a few belongings without names still in lost property boxes. Please make sure you check all the lost property locations:

  • In the hall foyer.
  • Under the shelter near the Collaboration Space (Old Canteen).
  • Outside the Beehive.
  • Outside the Out of School Hours Care Program.

*For health and safety reasons food containers and drink bottles will be disposed of over the break.

2025 Disco Update - important

Dear parents,

The PFA have organised a school disco for the first Friday of next term on Friday 25 July.  At this stage, we do not have enough volunteers for the years 3-6 session at 7.15-8.30pm.  The PFA are seeking 5 more volunteers to help out on the night.  Unfortunately, if there are not enough volunteers, the event will not be able to go ahead and there will be a lot disappointed children.

If you are able to help, can you please contact Ebby on 0418 175 995.

Battle of the Bands wrap up.

At Monday's assembly 5Bs band "Temu" was crowned the 2025 Battle of the Bands champion with their version on "Bones"! If you didn't get chance to attend, here is a quick snippet from this year's spectacular event!
