Dear Grade 4 Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Term 4! We are excited to continue our learning journey with a range of engaging activities designed to challenge and inspire our students.
Literacy Blocks
In Language Comprehension, students will engage in a novel study on the book Leo and Ralph by Peter Carnavas. This is a heartwarming story about friendship, growing up, and celebrating differences. Throughout this unit, students will learn new vocabulary and practise comprehension and inference skills through a range of activities.
In Writing, students are crafting narratives using the structure of The Writing Revolution. They will practise punctuating dialogue and direct speech, using complex sentences, and applying figurative and descriptive language to enhance their writing. In addition, students will revisit persuasive writing, applying their knowledge of structure and language features to construct clear and convincing arguments.
Spelling sessions will continue with the Spelling Mastery program, which explicitly teaches spelling rules, strategies, and patterns in a sequenced way. This program not only improves accuracy but also builds confidence and helps students recognise connections between spelling, reading, and writing. Alongside this, students will continue to practise handwriting to improve fluency, speed, and presentation in their written work.
Maths
In Numeracy, Daily Reviews will continue to reinforce fluency and strengthen key skills. This term, students will consolidate their ability to round numbers to given place values and apply this strategy when solving addition and subtraction equations. They will also continue developing their skills in converting between different units of time. Students will also explore the relationship between division facts and fractions and practise finding equivalent fractions. Multiplication and division facts will remain a focus, helping students build confidence with more complex problems. Additionally, students will investigate length and deepen their understanding of the features of 3D shapes and prisms.
Units of Work
In Term Four, students will engage with two Units of Work: Earth and Space Science and Civics and Citizenship. In Earth and Space Science, students will differentiate between rocks and minerals, explain how minerals form rocks, and explore the physical properties of different rock types. They will also investigate parts of space, linking their learning to the themes in Leo and Ralph.
As part of the Civics and Citizenship unit, students will identify features of government and law while learning about key democratic values. They will explore how and why decisions are made democratically in communities, as well as investigate the roles of local government and some of the services it provides.
Homework
A Homework grid will be posted in the Google Classroom. Students can choose at least one Literacy and one Numeracy activity each week. In addition, they should be regularly engaging in Just Right reading to support fluency and comprehension. For further practice, additional Mathematics tasks are available through Essential Assessment. Students will be able to access the Homework grid and record their work using their Google account.
