Year Two Team: Bec (Leader), Annie, Caitlin, Ella & Trang

Term 4 in Grade 2

We have enjoyed welcoming back our students this week and we look forward to another busy and productive term.

Numeracy

In Term Four, students will study fractions, focusing on halves, quarters, and eighths of a whole and of collections of items. They will further consolidate addition and subtraction strategies and basic number facts to solve problems. Students will explore aspects of measurement by comparing the capacity of various containers. At home students might like to count collections of money and find change from a total. They are also encouraged to practise reading an analogue clock to help support their understanding of time.

While these final suggestions may seem to be 'old school', they are still very important and practical ways to develop a sound understanding of these fundamental, life long skills.

Literacy

This term, the Year Two students will continue to build their fluency and comprehension to read decodable texts independently and accurately using the text Fantastic Mr Fox. They will focus on reading strategies such as questioning, inferring, finding keywords, retelling, predicting, and visualising. This term, students will not be bringing home Little Learners texts. Instead, they are encouraged to read books from home or borrow books from the school library and continue recording books in their reading log.

During Writing lessons, they will explore the genre of narrative, information, and persuasive texts. Students will further develop their abilities to expand sentences by using conjunctions, adjectives, and adverbs, while also enhancing their word choice, sentence fluency, and use of correct punctuation. They will continue to develop Speaking and listening skills by voicing opinions and reasons to persuade others. In addition, they will be encouraged to join in class discussions by listening, contributing their knowledge and asking questions.

Units of Work

In Term Four, our unit of work will focus on ‘Under the Sea’ looking specifically at sea life. The unit allows students to think about the difference between seas and oceans while considering the various sea and plant life that exist in the ocean zones. Students will explore the significance of the environment and food chains on sea life, as well as the impact of humans on ocean habitats. We are looking forward to our incursion from Wildlife Xposure on Thursday, 30th of October where we will get to see sea creatures up close!

We look forward to another fun and fantastic term ahead!

Kind regards,

The Grade Two Team
