Kindergarten's Artistic Journey Inspired by Egon Schiele
This term, our Kindergarten students have been exploring the wonderful world of art, taking inspiration from the famous Austrian artist Egon Schiele and his expressive painting House Wall on the River. As part of our visual arts learning, we spent time looking closely at Schiele’s unique use of colour, shapes, lines, and composition. The children were fascinated by how he used bold outlines and earthy tones to create character and mood in his work.
After discussing what made Schiele’s art special, the children began their own creative journey. First, they painted backgrounds using similar colours to those in the original painting, experimenting with blending and layering to recreate the soft, textured effect. Next, they used black pencil to draw their own imaginative houses, paying close attention to the style Schiele used—angular shapes, quirky proportions, and fine details.
To complete their pieces, the students added small but vibrant touches of colour using oil pastel crayons. This final step really brought their work to life and allowed their individual artistic voices to shine through.
Throughout the project, the children demonstrated wonderful concentration, thoughtful observation, and a real passion for creating. It was a joy to see how carefully they studied the original painting and how proud they were of their finished artworks. Each piece is truly a reflection of their growing skills and confidence as young artists.
We’re thrilled to share that we’ve entered these stunning artworks into the Let’s Hang It! art competition at NERAM. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to share their creativity with a wider audience. Fingers crossed—perhaps one of our budding artists will be selected as a finalist! No matter the outcome, we are incredibly proud of the effort and imagination our Kindergarten students have shown.
Surprise visit:
Year 1/2 students were excited to see Father Anthony and his beautiful dog Veena this morning. Father told us all about Veena’s job as a ‘Therapy and Service’ dog for the Emergency Services. Pictured here is Year 2 just before beginning their Initialit lesson.
