In a tough and spirited contest at Marty Busch Reserve, the SPC Inters fell short in their Herald Sun Shield elimination final against a determined Salesian College Sunbury outfit.

From the first bounce, Salesian came out with purpose and intensity, catching the Paddy’s boys off guard with clean ball movement and sharp link-up play. The early scoreboard pressure had SPC on the back foot, but resilient defensive efforts from Fred Foley and Paddy Stute kept the contest alive. Despite the congested forward line limiting opportunities, a late first-quarter goal from Ky Geljon gave SPC a glimmer of momentum heading into the second.

The second term saw Salesian lift another gear, dominating at the stoppages and consistently winning the ball at the source. SPC struggled to gain traction, often second to the ball and unable to stick crucial tackles. Angus McNamara’s classy drop punt from the pocket was a highlight, but the Paddy’s were left with work to do heading into the main break.

After halftime, the tone shifted. Led by inspirational captain Mitch Ward and supported strongly by Jet D'Arcy, Ruot Lual and Nash Cleary, the boys brought renewed energy and hunger to the contest. SPC began to take control in the middle, dominating territory and applying scoreboard pressure, though the result was just one major – a strong finish from Ward.

With four goals separating the sides going into the final term, the Paddy’s had to dig deep. The fight was there, but a few costly skill errors and decision-making under pressure made the comeback difficult. A late goal from Kyan Vaughan was reward for effort, but the gap proved too great.

Although the scoreboard didn’t go their way, the SPC Inters showed plenty of heart, perseverance and Paddy’s pride. It was a disappointing loss, but one that showcased the character and resilience of a group ready to take their next steps into senior football. As one chapter closes, a new one begins – and the future of SPC footy is in great hands.
