Halfway Through Year 1!

The Great Chair Strike of 2026!

This term, our writing focus has been all about sentence structure, taught through the exciting lens of persuasive text. We’ve been reading some wonderful books, learning how to form strong opinions, and backing them up with solid reasons.

To bring this learning to life, we experienced some real-life classroom drama a few weeks ago! On a Friday morning, the students walked into the classroom only to find that our chairs had gone on strike!

  • The Chairs' Grievances: They left us a book explaining their reasons for striking—mostly that they were tired of being swung on and hit!
  • The Demands: They wanted a little more respect and a few more "thank yous" before they would return.
  • The Verdict: At first, the kids thought standing up to work was a grand adventure. However, by Friday afternoon, the novelty had worn off, and everyone desperately wanted their chairs back!

The students channeled this urgency into their writing, moving from discussions to planning, drafting, and finally producing polished persuasive letters to the chairs.

The Good News: Luckily, by Monday morning, the chairs had read the letters and returned to normal! The Big Question: Have we been treating them better? So far, so good... but the students are a little worried the tables might go on strike next!

Stop-Motion Animation

We’ve been busy creating stop-motion videos to not only tell stories but also to share subtraction strategies! The students learned firsthand just how much patience it takes to build a video, discovering the importance of taking lots of photos to make the movement look smooth.

Green Screen Magic

Most recently, we’ve been exploring green screen technology and learning how to superimpose different backgrounds onto our videos. We used the traditional story of Tiddalick the Frog as our inspiration, acting out our own creative versions against the green screen.

This week, we had an afternoon screening showcasing all of our wonderful drama work! The students are incredibly excited to share their silent films, stop-motion animations, and green screen stories.
