Book of the Year Award: Early Childhood

The Emperor’s Egg

What the judges thought:

The Emperor’s Egg was shortlisted for its seamless combination of compelling storytelling, emotional depth and striking illustrations. Its thoughtful pacing, character-driven dialogue and high production values create a rich reading experience. Themes of integrity, patience and responsibility give the story lasting appeal, making it both engaging and meaningful for children.

Picture Book of the Year Award

Once I Was A Giant

What the judges thought:

Once I was a Giant is a visually breathtaking, thought-provoking story that sparks the imagination while remaining rooted in the essential truth of how vital trees are to our survival. It begins with a writer struggling for inspiration who is stunned when his pencil says ‘Hello.’ There are so many layers in this masterfully crafted tale that celebrates hope and renewal and prompts us to reflect on our connection to the world around us – especially trees.

Book of the Year Award: Eve Pownall

Peculiar Parents

What the judges thought:

Judges were particularly impressed with depth and quality of the peritext included in Peculiar Parents. It is encyclopaedic without ever feeling so, and well-aligned with the aim of the Eve Pownall category in extending understanding of non-fiction texts. The book is of a high-production quality, with humorous & engaging text well-supported by illustrations and historical taxonomy drawings.

BOOK WEEK: 

This week we celebrated Book Week  with our Family and Grandparents at the much-anticipated Dress-Up Book Parade and Book Fair.  It was wonderful to see so many Grandparents and Special Friends visit our school. 

AUTHOR VIRTUAL SESSION

 Students were very fortunate to enjoy virtual sessions with Australian authors this week.  These virtual sessions were a perfect way to bring their favourite authors into their classrooms.  Students interacted with Jazz Money author of"The Frog's First Song" and Deb Fitzpatrick author of "Tawny Trouble".

FUNKY FRUIT/VEGETABLE REWARD

Students are encouraged to bring their library bags in on Wednesday or Thursday (depending on their borrowing day) to have a chance at winning the funky fruit/vegetable reward for the week. 

Week 5 winner of  "Helga the Honey Melon" was Charlotte (Year Three) 

Week 6 winner of  "Spike" and "Chip" was Billy (Year Five) 

PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE  

The reading challenge deadline is Friday 18 September 2026. There are detailed instructions below about how to log books your children have read. If you are unable to access an appropriate device or internet connection at home for recording your child's reading, please just record the titles and authors on paper and they can bring them to me to record them.  For more information about the Student Experience Site you can watch the video available here. 

Adding Books 

Step 1: Follow this link to the Student Experience Site

Step 2: Log in using the button in the top right corner with the details on your child's PRC login card.

Step 3: To record books already read (you can include books that have been read earlier this year), click on the avatar in the top right corner, then click on "My Reading Log". NB: Books should only be added when they have been read from cover to cover!

Step 4: Start typing the name of the book read into the "Add a PRC Book" search, select the title from the drop-down menu and click "Add".

Step 5: If the book does not come-up in this search, it is not a PRC list book for 2026 and needs to be added as a personal choice book. Type the title and author into the fields and click "Add".

LIBRARY DAYS

Borrowing will occur during library lessons to give the students more focused time to engage with library borrowing. Students must have a library bag with them on borrowing days. 

Please refer to the list below to see which day your child/ren will need to bring their library bags and return any books that are due in order to borrow new books.
