Grade 5

Sarah Sussman & Ronan Stafford

Students in Grade 5 have adjusted quite well considering Mrs. Sussman has been unable to commence the year as yet due to personal circumstances. We’d like to extend our thanks to Miss Wilson and Mr. Douma for filling in to steer student learning in 5S.

Our snapshot of learning is as follows:

Reading: Students have selected good fit books and have access to Epic Books online. We’re revisiting reading reflection development via a TEEL structure (Topic sentence, Evidence, Explain and Link). Similarly, we’ve begun our unit on Narrative Analysis and are reading the text ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar as a cohort.

Writing: We have just completed our mini-unit on refreshing ‘The 6 Traits of Writing’ and will commence planning, composing and refining a narrative/entertainment piece for assessment.

Word Study: We have started by engaging in many game-based word activities to develop competency. We will be introducing more explicit teaching of spelling, grammar and punctuation as the term progresses.

Numeracy: Students have enjoyed various strategy games encompassing core mathematical skills. We’ve also commenced our ‘Place Value’ unit to refresh our knowledge before tackling the 4 processes (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

Inquiry: Students have been quite receptive to the sheer marvels of the human body by exploring the role of various systems. Early next term, students can capitalise on their knowledge with St. John Ambulance running First Aid sessions with our kids (dates TBC).

Respect: Students are working well together in small group and whole class activities. We are focusing on teaching gratitude as well as the core value of ‘Respect' across different spaces and places within the school.
