Healthy Families Webinar Series - Session 1

Carly McGuaran from Inform and Empower is presenting the 'Healthy Families' webinar series. We believe these three webinars would be very valuable and a great support to our OLA families. The school will cover the cost for all three webinars.

The first webinar session is focussed on MANAGING ANXIETY AND OTHER BIG FEELINGS FOR TWEENS. Carley will provide practical ideas and strategies for understanding and better supporting your tween struggling with big feelings, including anxiety.

Join us online on Thursday 23 May at 7:30PM. We recommend that even if you are unable to attend the live webinar, please still register to ensure you can access the replay which will be available for 30 days.

Lunch Clubs

We are very proud of our Lunch Clubs here at OLA!

Lunch clubs provide students with a chance to explore different interests and develop social connections. It's fantastic to see teachers volunteering their time and sharing their passions with students, creating an environment where learning extends beyond the classroom. We offer a variety of Lunch Clubs such as Computers, Sport, Wakakirri, Drawing, Choir, Library and Chess which ensures that there's something for everyone, catering to different interests and promoting overall wellbeing.

Georgina Manning Calming Strategies

Mindful Belly Breathing Technique

Teach children a simple exercise that will help them to calm down immediately. Explain the process:

  • Focus just on your belly while your breathe (just focusing on this area is also calming in itself)
  • When you breathe in, your belly should rise up and when you breathe out your belly should fall.
  • Slow the breathing down so you can count in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 breathing in through your nose and then out slowly through your mouth and notice the belly rise and fall each time.
  • Repeat 3 times

Role model calm behaviour

  • Role modelling calm and relaxed behaviour is important because children watch how you deal with life on a day-to-day basis. If you get anxious easily then your children will learn how to react to minor upsets in life.
  • If your child is anxious, it is also important not to get worried about their anxious behaviour as this will also be ‘catchy’. Children look to adults to role model an easy-going approach to life.
