News from the Maths Curriculum Action Team
This week we have included a problem solving activity that the whole family can do and challenge each other with. Problem solving is such an important aspect of mathematics as it encourages logical thinking, creativity and persistence. The problem below appears to be a simple one at first reading, however it is more challenging than it appears. Just as in literacy, problem solving in maths requires comprehension, so make sure that you read the problem carefully and understand what it is asking. We encourage our students of all ages to use manipulatives to solve maths problems so we encourage you to also. Use marbles, stones, small toys to make and explain what the question is asking and how you solved it.

16 galahs were sitting in 2 trees. Soon 2 galahs flew from the second tree and then 5 galahs flew from the first to the second tree. Then there were the same galahs in each tree.
How many galahs were in each tree in the beginning?
Goodluck and enjoy.
The Maths CAT
The VHAP English students have been developing their capacity as writers and have produced some fantastic quick writes this term. The following piece of writing has been developed by Holiday in Grade 6 and demonstrates fantastic word choice to create suspense.
VHAP students for Term 3 have been selected, and consent forms have been sent home. Information about the Term 3 program will be communicated later in the term once registrations are finalised.
MPW School Values
We are currently in the process of refining and defining our school values, and aligning them with our school vision of “We think, create and learn together”. At present, our school values are:
- Collaboration
- Critical Thinking
- Creativity
- Courage
The staff at MPWPS have completed some surveys about our current values to determine which are most applicable to our school, the community and the students. It is important to us that families and students have the opportunity to be a part of this process, and later in Term 2, we will communicate this via Compass and the Newsletter, to ensure everyone has the opportunity to contribute.
