Term 2 Week 5

Week 5, and it's Friday already, the benefit of working in a school is that the weeks are so busy that they really fly by. And this week has been absolutely fantastic at FHS with two major events happening. The first event was the SmArts program that saw a group of our students from Year 7 through the Year 10 engage in a sustainable up-cycling project where they learnt how to make their own bags. The students spent 4 days learning the basics of sowing and fabrics, visited a workshop in Brunswick and then designed and created their own amazing bags. A huge shout out to our art teacher Elyce who helped facilitate the program with the Smith Family.

The second highlight for me this week was last nights musical performance from our instrumental music students. The percussion was loud, the amps were turned all the way to 11 and all the students put on a great show. Congratulations to everyone but especially to the students who were performing in front of an audience for the very first time, you were amazing.

Looking ahead to next week

Saturday Gardening: The Grounds and Environment Subcommittee of School Council are organising a garden tidy up from 9am to 12 midday on Saturday 23 May. If you are able to help, please email Andrea at smith.andrea.mary@gmail.com, or just turn up for some or all of the session with some tools, gloves, and bucket and your enthusiasm.

Monday night: Our debating teams have their first 'unseen topic' debate next week. It's a tough thing to have to develop an argument on the spot, but we know you will be great.

Victorian Maths Challenge continues: Our Maths super stars continue with the Victorian Maths Challenge next week, after round 1 both of our teams are in 14th place out of a possible 250 so they are absolutely smashing it. Well done team.

State-wide Principal Conference: (If that isn't a phrase that fills you with the thrill of anticipation you're not really living)The principal team will be at the conference centre on Thursday and Friday this week getting an update on the State's education priorities.

Friday - Year 10 students visiting Melbourne Polytechnic: The Discover program is heading to Melbourne Polytechic next week to get another example of what life can be after high school and some further study options.
