Maths in Action: Year 2 Edition

Welcome to this week’s edition of Maths in Action!

As promised, we are opening the classroom doors to Year 2 to showcase how our students have been bringing the four operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—to life!

Unleashing the Maths Monsters!

This term, our Year 2 students stepped into the world of operations to explore how numbers can be combined, separated, grouped, and shared.

Why Multi-Operation Thinking Matters? Developing early fluency across all four operations helps students move beyond simple counting toward flexible multiplicative and relational thinking. Understanding that numbers can be represented in multiple ways—through symbols, concrete models, and visual arrays—prevents rote memorisation without comprehension. Creating visual representations of equal groups and sharing directly aligns with the Victorian Curriculum Year 2 standards, laying the essential groundwork for fractions, problem-solving, and mental computation in upper primary.

What it Looks Like (Hands-on in the Classroom)

Our Year 2 classrooms were buzzing with creativity and mathematical talk as students constructed their very own Maths Monsters:

  • Representing the Four Operations: Students designed colourful monsters and used them as a canvas to demonstrate their understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Multiple Representations: For every mathematical feature on their monster, students showed their thinking in three distinct ways: writing formal number sentences, drawing clear pictures, and organizing materials into equal groups or shared sets.
  • Creative Reasoning: Students experimented with different ways to manipulate numbers, choosing their own pathways to display mathematical concepts while explaining their creative choices to classmates.

This creative, multi-modal task allowed our Year 2s to apply their operational understanding in a joyful way while building confidence in their mathematical reasoning!

💡 Expert Insights: Fostering a Positive "Maths Mindset"

As our Year 2 teachers embrace these creative and inquiry-based approaches, here is a simple strategy you can use at home to support flexible operational thinking:

Weekly Mindset Strategy: Celebrate Multiple Ways to Show a Number

Mathematics is not just about getting one correct answer—it is about discovering the many different ways numbers connect and work together.

  • Spot Equal Groups Around the House: Notice everyday groupings together, like egg cartons (2x6), muffin tins, or rows of windows. Ask: "How many groups do you see? How could we share these equally among 3 people?"
  • Play "Rename the Number": Pick a number of the day (e.g.,12) and challenge each other to find 3 different ways to build it: using addition (6+6), subtraction (15-3), multiplication (3x4), or division (24/2).
  • Focus on the "How": When your child solves a calculation at home, praise their flexible thinking by asking: "What picture or story could you create to match that sum?"

Encouraging children to represent numbers in diverse ways builds strong mathematical confidence and deep conceptual flexibility.

🎲 Coming Up Next Week: A Family Fluency Game Focus!

With next week being a shorter school week, we will be stepping away from our classroom tours to share a fun, high-impact number fluency game that you can easily play at home with your family! Stay tuned for a practical strategy to build quick, flexible mental thinking together.
