Write a Book in a Day

The library recently entered two teams into 'The Write a Book in Day' competition, which is run by the Kids' Cancer Project.  Supported by the English department and Art Academy students spent the day in the library from 8am to 6pm.  The event provided students with the unique opportunity to experience in a practical and hands on way the process of writing a short story from concept to bookshelf.

Each team was given their own set of parameters on the morning of the event and were challenged to create a book of between 3500 to 5000 words, with illustrations.  The writers and illustrators worked together to plan their stories, resulting in a fun and engaging event for all involved.

The event is also run as a competition by The Kids' Cancer Project, with teams being judged on story structure, literary excellence and illustrations.   The results were amazing and after judging in November I will be able to publish the books in the newsletter for everyone to read.

Students have requested we make this an annual event and have a special bookshelf in the library for their books and the books that are yet to be written.  Completed books will also be published digitally by The Kids' Cancer Project for sick children in hospital to read.

I would like to thank English Domain leader Katrina Renouf for her guidance during the day and Visual Art teacher and Art Academy Coordinator Penny Fernandez for her invaluable advice to our illustrators.  I would also like to thank Inclusion Educational Support Toni and Casual Relief Teacher Nina Karol for their encouragement and support to the students during the day.
