Sports Academy

Elise Dowling - Sports Academy Coordinator

It’s been an eventful term, filled with a range of incursions, excursions, and the trials for the new 2025 Year 7 Sports Academy students. It was truly impressive to see 70 enthusiastic Grade 6 students showcasing their best in both their written applications and on trial day. Congratulations to those who have been accepted into the program—I’m excited about what we can achieve together in the future.

Taekwondo

At the end of Term 2, the Year 7-9 Sports Academy classes had the opportunity to attend two sessions with Coach Approach. This organisation leverages the expertise of elite and professional athletes to deliver their programs, focusing on qualities such as resilience, determination, discipline, work ethic, and mental fortitude. The chosen sport for these sessions was Taekwondo, and the students had the privilege of learning various techniques from a Sabom, a master instructor.

Hoop City

The Year 7-9 classes recently visited Hoop City, Australia's premier basketball training academy and facility. At Hoop City, athletes benefit from world-class basketball training technology and expert coaching. The Cheltenham location boasts NBL-standard facilities and serves as a training ground for Melbourne United.

During their visit, students participated in a 60-minute training session led by either Andy Lim, Development Coach for Melbourne United, or Fraser Kennedy, Head Coach of the Camberwell Youth League men’s team.

Netball Academy

Since its launch at the beginning of the year, the Netball Academy has continued to thrive and grow. It’s been wonderful to witness the students mastering fundamental skills that are essential for excelling on the court.

The students have had the opportunity to apply their skills in friendly morning matches against Mordialloc and Parkdale. These matches have been invaluable for putting their training into practice and will continue each term, with Parkdale set to visit Sandringham in Term 4.

Basketball Academy

Chase Basketball has been diligently preparing students with essential skills and knowledge in anticipation of their Inter-Academy tournament at MSAC next term. To support this preparation, Sandringham College recently hosted Mordialloc for a morning of friendly competition.

It has been inspiring to see our more experienced students stepping up and demonstrating their leadership during these matches. Special recognition goes to Robbie Sheedy, who regularly attends the Year 7 morning sessions and assists the Chase coaches with their training efforts.

Athlete Development Academy

A key focus of this program has been developing strong athletes with excellent movement skills, and it's been incredible to witness the progress students have made from the start of the year to now. On the court, they've been honing their speed and agility, while in the gym, they’ve been mastering proper squatting and bench pressing techniques. The improvement in their overall performance is a testament to their hard work and dedication.
