EXPECTING THE BEST

At Resurrection School, Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is about following our School Expectations and making choices that help everyone feel safe, respected, and ready to learn. One of the most important ways students demonstrate our school expectations is by choosing to be an upstander rather than a bystander.

Standing up for what is right is not always easy. Students may notice someone being left out, hear unkind words, or witness behaviour that isn't respectful, responsible, kind, inclusive or safe. In these moments, it can feel easier to stay quiet or assume someone else will help. Many students worry about saying the wrong thing, losing friendships, or drawing attention to themselves. These feelings are normal, which is why learning to respond positively is an important part of growing socially and emotionally.

Through our PBL program, we explicitly teach students that they all have a role in creating a positive school environment. Being an upstander does not necessarily mean confronting someone. It can mean including a child who is alone, using kind words, encouraging respectful behaviour, or seeking help from a trusted adult. These actions reflect our shared expectations and show courage, empathy, and responsibility.

Families play a vital role in reinforcing these messages at home. Talking about everyday situations and asking questions such as, "What could you do if someone was being left out?" or "Who could you ask for help?" helps children develop the confidence to make positive choices when faced with challenging situations.

Every time students choose kindness, inclusion or action, they strengthen our school community. By working together through our PBL approach, we can help every student understand that respectful, responsible, and safe behaviour is everyone's responsibility—and that every positive action can make a lasting difference.
