Learning Update

From Mr Collins 3-6

Week 2 and 3 have gone by and we are really in a rhythm now. The new timetable is working perfectly and the kids are enjoying the extended sessions in the middle block. 

English 

Poetry has run rampant in the 3-6 room, with the kids working on colour poems, Haikus, Cinquains, and Diamantes. Our Mentor Text this week is 'Bin Chicken' which the kids are thoroughly enjoying. We have just completed our class novel 'Fluff' which was as ridiculous as the kids had told me. Keep reading at home everyone, we are really getting somewhere.

Maths

Number patterns and duration of time has been a priority over the last 2 weeks. Kids are counting multiples of different quantities and some are even delving into multiple rule patterns.  

TRP (The Resilience Project)

This week was the last week to finalise the board games for the students in grade 4,5,6. Most of them are almost complete with only a few minor details left to finish.  

PE

ATHLETICS!!! We are preparing for the upcoming Cluster Athletics Day by spending more time learning the skills of different Athletics sports. So far we have nailed our batton changes, but are still working on perfecting our shotput and discus throws. 

Integrated Studies

The timeline is in full swing and we have moved onto discussing migration and the reasons people want to move to Australia. Feel free to ask your children and the different 'pull & push factors'. 

The Song Room

Talk about making a racket! The kids are having a blast learning about the various facets of music theory in the most entertaining way possible... By making a lot of noise.

Literacy

This week in Literacy, we have been consolidating our learning of the oi (as in boil), oy (as in boy), and oo (as in book) sound patterns. Students who continue to read at home are flying! Well done. 

Our new Heart Word teams are the Sausage Rolls and the Chicken Nuggets! Students have been using their mini whiteboards to practise these words until they know them "by heart," as they are words that can't always be sounded out. For example:

Numeracy

We have just begun learning about multiplication using arrays, and the students are loving it! They have been creating arrays with a variety of hands-on materials, including glitter pom-poms, counters, blocks, and even pasta. It's been wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they explore this new mathematical concept.

Highlight(s) 

In History, we have been exploring jobs from the past, present, and future. Students also learnt how to use a Venn diagram to compare and sort different types of jobs, encouraging great discussions and critical thinking.

As part of The Resilience Project, students have made their very own gratitude journals and each day they are encouraged to write or draw something they are appreciative of.

STEM & Kitchen Garden Program (KGP)

It has been wonderful to come to Raywood Primary School this term. Thank you to all the staff, students, and families for making me feel so welcome. It's lovely to be here! I will be teaching STEM and the KGP with the students.

Over the last few weeks, we have had a wonderful time. In the garden, we have made seed bombs filled with assorted vegetable seeds. You can store them and plant them whenever you are ready! We have also planted some potatoes and have also been doing a lot of weeding and watering to maintain our vegetable patch. 

Soon we will begin preparing our spring seeds to grow seedlings ready for planting. If you have any spare seeds at home that you no longer want or need, please feel free to bring them into school, as the students would love to plant them!

In the kitchen over the last few weeks, we have made fried rice lettuce cups and savoury muffins. These were a big hit with the students. We are focusing on safety and hygiene in the kitchen as we cook, and everyone is doing a great job.

In the coming weeks, in STEM we will be looking at how we can be "Water Heroes". We will be learning about why water is important and how we can make small changes that have a big impact on saving water in everyday life.
