R U OK? Day Reflection

Last week, I had the privilege of speaking to the Middle school students about R U OK? Day, a National Day of Action on September the 11th dedicated to reminding everyone to check in on those around them and to support mental wellbeing through genuine conversation.

The aim of the presentation was to raise awareness about the importance of connection and to empower students with simple, practical tools to support one another — not just on R U OK? Day, but every day.

We watched a short, engaging video that showed students dealing with challenges but then gave suggestions on what it looked like to be a supportive friend. The video highlighted everyday actions that can have a big impact on peers — such as noticing them, listening to them, sitting with them, talking to them, including them, laughing together, sending a kind message, or even just offering a smile.

These small gestures can help someone feel seen and valued, and it may open the door for deeper conversations if needed.

We then looked at the four key steps that R U OK? promotes for starting and continuing a conversation with someone who might be struggling:

  1. Ask R U OK? – Pick the right moment and ask in a caring way.

  2. Listen – Give them your full attention, without judgment.

  3. Encourage Action – Help them think about what they can do next, whether it's talking to a trusted adult or accessing support.

  4. Check In – Follow up later to show you care and remind them they’re not alone.

As parents and carers, you play a role in continuing this message at home. I encourage you to talk to your children about how it’s always okay to ask for help — for themselves or for a friend.

Further information can be accessed on the R U Okay Website.

When Holidays Fall During Term Time

Article by Tess Spalliera - Head of Learning Middle School

At Overnewton College, we value the important role that regular school attendance plays in supporting both learning and wellbeing. Research shows that even short breaks in routine can influence progress, which is why we recommend that students avoid taking extended holidays during term time where possible.

We also recognise that, from time to time, family circumstances may mean a child is away from school for an extended period. In these situations, we encourage families to speak with their child’s Head of School ahead of time so that we can provide the best possible support.

While teachers are not expected to prepare additional work for extended absences due to holiday leave, students are encouraged to stay engaged in their learning through age-appropriate activities such as journal writing and reading.

Assessments and Absences

To ensure fairness and authenticity, all assessments must be completed at school under teacher supervision. If a student is absent on the day of an assessment, teachers will make reasonable arrangements for the task to be completed once they return.

If a student is absent for an extended period due to holiday leave, they will receive a mark of UG (ungraded) for the missed assessment. Please be reassured that this will not automatically disadvantage your child, as teachers use a range of assessment evidence to make judgements against the Australian Curriculum when determining end-of-semester curriculum standard grades.

Middle School Musicians Star!

Frozen Kids

Middle School has been buzzing with creativity this term, with students taking centre stage in Frozen Kids as part of the Overnewton Festival of Music. Nearly 60 Year 5 and 6 students showcased their acting, singing, and dancing talents in a joyful performance that brought the Disney favourite to life. Their hard work and teamwork shone through, earning them well-deserved applause.

Congratulations to our Middle School cast on such a fantastic achievement! The Festival of Music continues with performances this week and during the final week of term. Details can be found on the Encore page.

Gravity Band at Victorian Schools Music Festival

Gold was the ranking achieved by our fabulous Middle School concert band, Gravity Band at the VSMF last week. After travelling to the Hawthorn Centre, the students performed 3 pieces for a panel of adjudicators and then participated in an on-stage workshop.

The students are to be congratulated on this outstanding result. We look forward to hearing more from them in coming months.
