WORK EXPERIENCE

Congratulations to those students who organized work experience during the Term 2 holidays. Giving up some of their holiday time to explore their interests proved the right move for these students who were able to experience their chosen workplace, understand the day-to-day activities that occur, and that the workplace can be a fun and interesting place when doing something you like!
It is encouraging to see more students showing initiative in undertaking work experience, and I encourage others to do so. If you are interested, please pop in to see me, my office is in the library.

Where was your placement?
The location of my placement was the Mildura Private Hospital.
Why did you choose this employer, profession, or workplace?
The reason I have chosen this workplace is to see if medicine is meant for me, as I enjoy the concept of medicine.
What were you hoping to learn or achieve during this placement?
I was looking forward to observing what type of skills I will need for the future in case I choose to continue in medicine. I also wanted to learn the importance of handling a situation, such as a patient in need, or an employee in need, anything to help others around me.
Did work experience meet your expectations? Good parts, not so good…?
It has somewhat reached my expectations; the negative part of this experience is due to some problems with assigning me to an employee, and there is not that much to do if everything has already been completed from the previous day. The positive side of this experience is thanks to observation, we were able to follow a nurse to help us get familiar with the area and how to use most equipment. We were able to watch nurses or doctors perform dressings on the patient’s wounds.
Would you recommend other students participate in the work experience program? Why?
I would only recommend this for people who can handle blood as there are some uncomfortable moments.
I would also recommend this to those who might want to do a job like being a nurse in the future. Such as helping the patients with their personal needs in a bathroom, collecting blood, making their beds, and lots of paperwork.

My work experience placement was at the Mildura Private Hospital in the Day Procedure Unit. I chose to do my work experience at the hospital because I would love to do nursing as my future career. Doing work experience in a hospital was a good way of seeing what it would be like in a hospital environment. I would recommend doing work experience at the hospital for anyone who is looking into a career in health, as it helps you understand what happens in a hospital and helps you to think about what you would like to work in for your career in health.
