Year 3/4 News: What a Busy Start!
It’s hard to believe we are already in Week 4 of the term, which means we’re almost halfway through!
This term is a busy and exciting time. As we get into assessments to look at the growth made this year, we are focusing on the important lesson that with effort, perseverance, and hard work comes rewards. The students are rising to the challenge and showing great dedication!
Camp Excitement!
Get ready for an adventure! Camp is next week! We are all looking forward to heading to Thalgarrah for our exciting overnight excursion. A detailed packing list has already been sent home. Please check that you have everything ready for a fun and memorable trip!
What We've Been Learning
Religion
We are currently exploring the concept of prayer and all the different forms of prayer we can experience. So far, we have looked at meditation and vocal prayer, examining both formal and informal ways to communicate and reflect.
Maths
We kicked off the term by completing a unit on decimals. We successfully used our prior knowledge of fractions to help us deeply understand the role of decimals as a "part of a whole."
Currently, we are mastering length. Students are learning the importance of estimating using an educated guess and measuring with accuracy. We're using our decimal knowledge to measure with greater precision and are applying this to find the perimeters of shapes and the length of 3D shapes.
Next up, we will be diving into a practical unit on money!
English
We have been engaging with the novel 200 Minutes of Danger, acting as literary detectives to work out the connections and links between the stories. We’ve had lots of insightful discussions about what makes a story exciting, focusing on elements like rising tension and the impact of different endings.
Sport
We are continuing to learn the specific skills required for volleyball, including digging, setting, serving, and spiking. We can’t wait to put these skills into practice during game play!
Health
In Health, we are completing a vital unit on taking actions to stay safe. We are exploring the rights a child has and what safe/unsafe situations look and feel like. Students are learning to recognise signs that may indicate they or others are in an unsafe situation, and importantly, what responses and protective strategies can be used to promote safety. Last week, we also took part in Daniel Morcombe Day where we focused on being safe online. Below are some suggested questions that can continue the conversation:
- Do you think there’s a difference between what happens online and what happens in person?
- Would you like to show me how to play some of the games you play online?
- Have you felt worried or unsafe when you’ve been online?
- Do you talk to people online? How do you know them?
- What are some body clues someone might have if they feel unsafe online?
- Do you feel comfortable talking to me or another adult if you ever feel unsafe?
Visual Art
We have just finished a beautiful Opal Artwork inspired by Australian artist Dianne Delandro. Students used their knowledge of cool and warm colours and applied techniques like scraping to create texture and using line to add value, making shapes appear 3D.
Science (with Mrs Mackson)
3/4 are learning all about the Solar System! The students have thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on fun of making the Solar System using playdough and creating their very own educational Music Raps about the planets.
Geography
We have been exploring the significance of Environments and the essential role they play for the survival of both humans and animals. We are currently looking at the perception of environments before we move on to discussing effective ways to protect them.
