What’s Worth Learning? Developing Knowledge That Can Travel
One of the most important questions we ask when designing learning at Milgate is: What is truly worth learning?
There is more information available to children today than at any other point in history. This does not make knowledge less important. In fact, it makes thoughtfully selected knowledge, and the ability to interpret and use it, even more essential. Our role is not simply to help students accumulate facts, but to develop knowledgeable, curious and critical thinkers who can make connections, evaluate information and apply their understanding in unfamiliar situations.
From knowing to understanding
Knowledge and skills provide the foundation for all learning. Students need rich vocabulary, strong literacy and numeracy skills, and knowledge of the world. At Milgate, teachers explicitly teach this important content and provide opportunities for students to practise and consolidate it.
However, remembering something in one lesson does not necessarily mean a student understands it deeply or can use it elsewhere. Deep learning occurs when students can explain an idea, connect it with previous learning, consider it from different perspectives and apply it in a new context. This ability is known as transfer of learning.
For example, students might learn about the needs of a particular animal and its habitat. While this knowledge is valuable, conceptual learning takes them further. They may explore the broader idea that living things depend on their features and environments to meet their needs. Students can then transfer this understanding to a plant, another animal or an ecosystem they have never previously studied.
The facts may change, but the conceptual understanding travels with them.
Looking at learning conceptually
Concepts are powerful ideas that help students organise and connect knowledge. Ideas such as change, connection, responsibility, perspective, systems and causation can be explored across different subjects, year levels and real-world contexts.
Rather than encountering every topic as a separate collection of facts, students learn to notice patterns and relationships. Teachers support this by asking questions such as:
- How is this connected to what we already know?
- What has changed, and what caused that change?
- Whose perspective is represented or missing?
- How does this system work?
- What responsibilities arise from this knowledge?
- Would this understanding still apply in another situation?
These questions require students to think beyond recall. They must explain, justify, compare, challenge and apply their ideas.
This is also why our units of inquiry are organised around a central idea, rather than simply a topic. A topic tells students what they are learning about. A central idea helps them understand what they are learning to understand.
Critical thinkers, not passive learners
We want our students to be active participants in their learning, not passive recipients waiting for the teacher to provide every answer.
This does not mean students are expected to discover everything independently. Effective inquiry is carefully designed and guided by the teacher. Teachers explicitly build the knowledge and skills students need, select rich examples and case studies, model ways of thinking, address misconceptions and provide feedback. Students are then challenged to question, investigate, discuss and use what they have learned.
Critical thinkers ask whether information is accurate, consider the evidence supporting a claim and recognise that different perspectives may exist. They are willing to revise their thinking when presented with stronger evidence. They do not simply accept the first answer they encounter or repeat information without understanding it.
These capabilities are increasingly important in a world where students encounter an enormous volume of information, opinions and AI generated content. Knowing how to locate an answer is useful; knowing whether that answer is credible, complete and responsible is essential.
Why this matters
Learning conceptually prepares students for more than a particular assessment or the next year level. It helps them approach unfamiliar problems with confidence because they have developed ways to think, not simply answers to remember.
Our goal is for students to leave Milgate with strong knowledge and skills, but also with the capacity to:
- ask thoughtful questions;
- make meaningful connections;
- evaluate evidence and information;
- consider different perspectives;
- explain and justify their reasoning;
- transfer their learning to new situations; and
- use their understanding to make informed and responsible decisions.
Ultimately, what is worth learning is not only the knowledge students need today. It is the knowledge, understanding and ways of thinking that will help them continue learning long after they leave our classrooms.
