Year 9 - Malthouse Theatre Project

The Semester One Year 9 Theatre elective class recently participated in The Suitcase Series, a creative program run by Malthouse Theatre. As part of the project, students explored a script titled Atomic by Amelia Chandos-Evans and devised an original performance based on the key theme of climate change. The unique challenge: everything required for their performance had to fit into a single suitcase.

Students took on a range of production roles, collaboratively rehearsed and refined their scenes, and on Friday 20 June, travelled to the Malthouse Theatre to perform in a professional setting. With great enthusiasm and focus, they applied elements of lighting, sound, costume, make-up and props, with their student directors continuing to refine the work right up to the final moments.

Following their performance, students had the opportunity to watch pieces by other schools, gaining insight into the many creative ways the same script and theme could be interpreted. In the afternoon, students chose from a variety of workshops led by theatre professionals, covering topics such as lighting and sound design, theatre safety, and backstage tours of the Malthouse.

Throughout the entire day, our students demonstrated creativity, collaboration and respect. They are to be congratulated for their efforts.
