What Did You Do At School?

Prep & Year 6

This year, the Year 6 and Prep students enjoy being buddies and meeting every two weeks on a Thursday. As the older buddies, we love teaching them new things and looking out for them on the playground. During lunchtimes, we dig in the sandpit, make creations with blocks or play their favourite outdoor games like ‘Duck Duck Goose’ or ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’.

When we first met our buddies, we had a fun time learning things about them. We helped them to decorate the first letter of their name and to write their letters correctly. During another session, we did some pattern work and made a picture using 2D shapes. We have also helped them to make a card for Mother’s Day. It was enjoyable for all of us to hear what they thought was special about their Mum and how much they loved them. In our last buddy session, we played a variety of Maths games.

All of Year 6 cannot wait until our next buddy time. We love watching them learn and building relationships with our special friends.

Year 1

In Maths, we have learned to make equal groups, arrays and use repeated addition. Ask us to show you our impressive skills! Did you know a polystyrene cup will never decompose? If it is something that God has made and found in nature, it is natural. If it is something that is made in a factory then it is man-made. We have been learning about the impact we have on God’s creation and how we can make a difference by applying the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ strategy to leave a light footprint rather than a heavy one!

Year 2

In Year 2, many of us loved munching on some delicious dumplings during International Week. We were also impressed by the dance incursion, and we had fun learning a new dance using ribbon sticks.

While attending the National Simultaneous Storytime, we enjoyed listening to the reading of The Truck Cat and were excited to cuddle with our own toy cats during the reading.

In Integrated Studies, we have been learning to understand the term ‘decompose’, and we are eagerly awaiting to find out what our buried rubbish will look like when we pull it out of the dirt in a couple of weeks. Amongst all of these things, we have been busy completing assessments and impressing our teachers with our progress this semester.

Year 3 & 4

With our jackets, beanies and backpacks, we ventured off to the Melbourne Zoo last week and were greeted by the glorious sunshine. We explored the various exhibits, noticing the fauna, flora and the signs of human impact and erosion. Upon returning to school, we wondered what the process was to train these animals and pondered just how many animals were in the zoo in total. Thank you, God, for a wonderful day! Please enjoy the student reflections below.

We think the most magnificent sea animal were the seals. They loved doing flips and tricks under water! The most amazing land animal was the snow leopard. Melbourne Zoo was super cool and if we could, we would go again and again!

While we have been learning about life cycles in Integrated Studies, Year 3 and 4 have adopted some live Monarch Butterfly chrysalises. It has been so exciting to watch the chrysalis turn from a vibrant green to greyish tones. Once we see the faint outline of a wing, it means that the butterfly will emerge in a day or so! When we arrived at school on Monday morning, 3D’s butterfly had hatched, looking strong and ready to fly. We released it later that afternoon, so it could find a safe habitat with plenty of food. Surprisingly, 3K’s hatched at recess on Tuesday. We are excited to see when the other butterflies hatch.

Year 5

Wow! What an incredible few weeks it has been in Year 5!

In Mathematics, we've been diving into the topics of space and location. During our visit to the Enviro Barn, we practised drawing a bird’s-eye view map of the veggie patch. We experimented with identifying key elements with the use of a legend and tried to draw each section to scale. Our map skills grew even further as we explored how to pinpoint locations using coordinates and grid references, as well as how to give directions using cardinal points. To showcase our new learning, we've been challenged to design a scaled map of an imaginary island—an exciting opportunity to be both creative and precise!

In Integrated Studies, we've been learning about the survival of living things. Did you know that yeast is a living organism? Through an experiment, we discovered that when yeast is given food, such as sugar, it can grow and reproduce. God's creation truly is phenomenal.
