Welcoming our NAIDOC Artist in Residence Sharyn Egan

Sharyn Egan is a painter, weaver and sculptor. A member of the Stolen Generation, much of her artwork is a commentary on her life as a Nyoongar woman, and the associated trauma, emotions and deep sense of loss and displacement experienced by Aboriginal people. Egan was removed from her family at the age of three and placed in New Norcia Mission until the age of 13. She was never reunited with her parents.

Egan re-entered education at the age of 37 when she enrolled to study for a Diploma in Visual Arts at Claremont Art School. She then gained an Associate Degree in Contemporary Aboriginal Art, and a Bachelor of Visual Arts from Curtin University. From there she has gone on to achieve a postgraduate qualification in Cultural Tourism and Training and Assessment.

Her woven works include traditionally styled contemporary forms and baskets, as well as sculptural forms often based on flora and fauna that have totemic significance for the Nyoongar people. She works predominately in oils, ochres, resins and traditional and contemporary fibres.

Based in Fremantle, Egan’s works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Australia and the Berndit Museum of Anthropology, as well as numerous private collections around Australia. She has been awarded prominent public art commissions, including Perth Stadium, Elizabeth Quay and Yagan Square.

The College is delighted to host Sharyn Egan as our artist-in-residence in 2024.

Futures Expo

On Thursday 6 June, All Saints' College hosted the Futures Day for our Year 10 students. This annual event helps to provide our students with information about potential career pathways and to better guide their subject selection in Years 11 and 12.

The day started with a keynote presentation from Brittany Garbutt, who launched her business Pretzel in 2017. It was an inspiring address from a young entrepreneur who has grown her business exponentially since she opened her first shop in a shipping container in Northbridge.

The second session included a presentation from the College's Assistant Director of Teaching and Learning, Mr Jim Shackleton, which covered important aspects of the Year 11 subject selection and counselling process. In the third session, Mr Paul King (VET and Pathways Coordinator) covered General and VET options for Years 11 and 12.

The fourth session saw the Year 10s take part in various industry panel discussions led mainly by members of our Old Saints and Parents and Friends' Associations. To read more about this, please visit the Old Saints section of the Courier here.

Finally, to conclude the day, the Year 10s had early access to the Futures Expo in the Dance Studio where industry experts and tertiary and training organisations were on hand to share their knowledge with our students.

Cybersecurity Expert Paul Litherland Enlightens Students and Parents

We were delighted to welcome cybersecurity specialist Paul Litherland to the College this week who shared valuable insights with our students about staying safe online.

Paul's entertaining talk captured the attention of our students, opening their eyes to the risks of using social media and the visibility of their social media activity. Paul finished off the day with an evening presentation to parents on Internet Awareness.

A huge thank you to Paul for delivering crucial insight about cybersecurity to our community!

2024 ACC Cross Country

Thursday 30 May saw the conclusion of the Cross Country season with the 2024 Associated and Catholic Colleges' Cross Country Carnival. Although we witnessed some amazing individual achievements over several events, this season was all about commitment to the team, representing the College and achieving personal bests.

Two Running Club training sessions each week attracted many keen runners, including Junior and Senior School students, Old Saints, parents and staff. This created an enjoyable and competitive environment for those wanting to push themselves or for those simply wanting to improve their running skills. The sessions were conducted by Lotte George (Class of 2021) and coach Ben Green from Front Runner Sport, and contributed significantly to the fitness and overall performance of our runners.

On the day All Saints’ College finished 13th overall, out of more than 80 schools represented, a pleasing achievement. In addition to this overall result, there were some exceptional individual results, with 19 students placing in the top 75 of their respective divisions (as indicated below).  Each race had approximately 400 students competing, so this is an incredible achievement. Students worked very hard to achieve their place in the ACC Cross Country team, and we saw PBs from a number of our competitors on the day.

A very special mention goes to Eli Saratsis (1st), Olivia Smith (2nd), Toby Riches (3rd) and Austin Saratsis (5th), all of whom qualify for the ACC All Star Team for 2024. Nate Pauline also finished in the top 10, an outstanding achievement.

A few other special mentions must go to:

– Our Year 11/12 runners who took time out from studying while on their exams.

– All the reserve runners who stepped up on the day to represent the College.

Below are the runners who finished in the top 75 in their age group out of around 400 competitors:

Congratulations to the entire team on their efforts and commitment this season, as we look forward to Athletics season next term and another successful cross country season in 2025.
