Assistant Principal's Report

Mrs Rose Thomson

The start of a new year is always an exciting time, with new goals for teaching and learning and a renewed commitment to ensuring every student receives the support they need from their teachers to thrive. Our staff are dedicated to building strong relationships, providing clear instruction, offering timely feedback, and creating classrooms where students feel confident to ask questions and challenge themselves.

We want our students to be actively engaged in their learning each day. Engagement is more than simply completing tasks — it means thinking deeply, participating fully, and taking ownership of progress. When students embrace opportunities to learn, they build the knowledge and skills that lead to academic success.

Academic success looks different for every student. For some, it may mean extending themselves into new challenges; for others, it may mean steady improvement and growing confidence. What matters is consistent effort, a willingness to seek support, and a commitment to doing one’s personal best. We are proud of the culture of aspiration we continue to build together.

Families play a vital role in supporting learning at home. Establishing a consistent daily routine helps students feel organised, calm, and prepared for each school day. Simple habits such as charging laptops overnight, packing school bags and lunches the evening before, and setting regular homework times and bedtimes make a significant difference to readiness and focus. These routines help students arrive at school feeling prepared to learn.

Strong communication between home and school is also essential. We encourage parents and carers to connect with teachers early if there are questions, concerns, or ways we can better support your child. When staff and families work in partnership, we create the strongest possible foundation for student growth and achievement.

I look forward to working with you throughout the year as we continue to ensure that every student is supported, engaged, and successful in their learning.

Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting

Our Semester One Curriculum Maps have been published on Compass. Curriculum Maps outline Years 7 to 10 Units of work and Common Assessment Tasks (CATs) and Years 11 and 12 Areas of Study and School Assessed Coursework (SACs) for all subjects.

A Semester One VCE SAC calendar will also be published to VCE students. This SAC calendar has the SAC date and time for every VCE subject. Students may have a SAC scheduled from 3:30pm to 4:30pm (which will appear on Compass timetables). This is particularly for subjects where there are multiple classes and the SAC needs to run at the same time for all classes (for example English and General Mathematics).

Feedback on CATs and SACs will be provided to students and families on a continuous basis through Compass Learning Tasks in the form of comments and/or rubrics.

To view the tasks and feedback, select the Learning Tasks tab on your child’s Profile page and refer to the ‘Assessment’ tasks.

On your child’s homepage, you will also be notified if there is an upcoming task due in a week or any overdue tasks.

Years 11 and 12- Focussed Learning Time (FLT)

Focussed Learning Time (FLT) is a scheduled class every Wednesday period 4 for all Year 11 and 12 VCE students. This session helps promote the expectations of students to undertake quiet work tasks during study sessions and utilise study time effectively.

What does this session involve?

  • Independent private study for completing set work
  • Review of coursework
  • Opportunities to study for an upcoming SAC
  • Completing practice exam questions
  • Completing Edrolo tasks

Subject Teachers may attend these sessions to check in on how students are progressing in their subject and work with individual students/small groups.

Students should:

  • Come prepared every session with work to complete and bring required equipment.
  • Set up a study timetable for the week. Let the FLT teacher know what they will specifically be working on for the FLT session and all study sessions for the week.

Year 9 and 10- Preparing for Future Pathways

As part of our commitment to preparing students for future pathways, several important career and assessment milestones are approaching for our Year 9 and Year 10 students.

Year 10 students will undertake their Work Experience placement during Term 2. This is a valuable opportunity for students to gain insight into the workplace, develop employability skills, and explore potential career interests. We encourage students to begin considering possible placements now and to start making contact with organisations in the coming weeks.

Year 10 students will also complete their first Semester Examinations this year. These exams are an important step in developing effective study habits and preparing for the senior years of schooling. Further information regarding exam schedules and preparation support will be shared with students.

For our Year 9 students, we are pleased to be offering Morrisby Careers Profiling. Through the Department of Education, all Year 9 students in Victorian Government schools are provided with free access to the internationally recognised Morrisby online career education tool. This program supports students to better understand their strengths, interests, and potential career pathways, helping them make informed decisions about their senior secondary studies and beyond.

Students will complete their Morrisby assessment during Periods 3 and 4 on Thursday 5th of March and must bring a fully charged laptop on the day.

As part of the My Career Insights program, each student’s Morrisby profile is complemented by a one-on-one session with a qualified career consultant from the Australian Centre for Career Education. This personalised guidance supports students in refining their Career Action Plan, setting goals, and remaining motivated in their learning.

This is a significant opportunity for our Year 9 students as they begin thinking more seriously about their future pathways, and we look forward to supporting them through this important stage.

Years 7 and 8- Enrichment Program

The Enrichment Program at Greensborough College continues this year with Year 7 students either undertaking the Athlete Development Program (ADP), or a semester of Science Investigations and a semester of Art Enrichment (Media studies and Visual Communication and Design). Year 8 students undertake either ADP, or a semester of Dance, eSports, Lego Lab: Gears and Gadgets or Heroes and Villains in Semester One and Music, eSports, Lego Lab: Gears and Gadgets or Science Models in Semester Two.

We will showcase their work in these programs throughout the year.
